I am currently looking to buy a 1962 Daily Missal, and would like some assistance.

It seems that the two companies currently making the Missal are Angelus Press and Baronius Press.

Objectively, how do these two differ from one another?
Subjectively, do you have a personal preference?
For statistical purposes, do you have the Angelus one, Baronius one, or neither?

These two links should help you answer your questions:

Personally I use the Angelus one, and I love it

DW and I still have our St. Joseph’s Missals. Mine was given to me in March of 1963 when I was confirmed. My ribbons are tattered and the gold leaf on the edges is pretty much gone but I can still use it. I have not seen an Angelus or Baronius but I have seen old St. Joseph’s on EBay. St. Joseph’s was THE Missal in 1963.

I own both the Baronius and the Angelus Press missals.

In addition to the proper prayers and the ordinary, both contain many devotions, prayers, and some explanatory texts. I have not compared these supplementary materials side by side. Both seem more than adequate for my purposes (Sunday Mass in the USA).

The cover of the Baronius seems much more substantial and durable. The pages in the Baronius are thicker and the type is easier to read.

In my opinion the Baronius is far superior.

I have the Baronius Missal and am quite pleased with it. Only complaint is that it does have small print and my eyes are getting older. Nothing that my glasses can’t handle, though.

Missals are printed on quality paper and bindings designed to last a long time. It would seem as if estate sales could be an economical way of obtaining a tridentine missal.

The Angelus is great. I have a St. Andrew’s Missal and an Angelus, and it’s no comparison.

I was deciding between these two missals as well until I found the Baronius Bible/Missal combo (not one book, but two sold together), and seeing as I’m thrifty / borderline-cheap, I opted for the combo.

I’ve notice more parishioners have the Angelus Press copy, so I’m assuming most prefer it. It’s nice to have a different looking missal if you’re in a frequent habit of forgetting things in church like I am.

Indeed. There are no problems with the bindings of my Missal and the holy cards I used in the Missal have not faded (being tucked away inside the Missal). It’s an alternative and then you have the fact that the Missal was used…

I use the Angelus reprint of the Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962

If you are going to assist at a Mass prayed by a diocean priest, SSPX, or FSSP, I’d recomend the reprint offered by Angelus…

I think the type is larger in the Daily Roman Catholic Missal 1962.(the Angelus reprint) Also, the guilding on the page edges of the Baronius wears off quickly according to some who use them, but it’s no big deal really. If you go with the Angelus reprint, pm me and I’ll direct you to where you can get one for 42 bucks shipped.(Brand new) I doubt if you can find anyone who will match that price, let alone beat it 😉 If looks mean that much to you, then the Baronius does have a slightly nicer looking cover, but you’ll pay more.

If you are going to be assisting at Mass offered by an independent priest, in all probability, you may need this missal…

Those two links are just to make you familiar with the missals, you may find better prices.

I have the Angelus, and loooove it!

Ditto on the Angelus. I just wish it was a little thinner, perhaps by removing some of the sections (such as Tenebrae, which I am thankful for) and putting them into a second volume of devotional prayers. Some may not like the fact it is published by SSPX.

I lost my St. Joseph’s Daily Missal. It was my first before the changes - I have one with the early changes in it but would prefer my original - which disappeared. Either left in Church or perhaps lost here at home…Old and faded but still prayer-worthy. I’d LOVE to get another St. Joseph’s Daily Missal, if you know where they can be found - why so difficult to get reprints?

Dear “I Believe” -
Thanks for that link - Ironically, after posting here last night, I continued researching and had found “southwell” but didn’t see that great comparison list ! However, many thanks, because now I’m more confused ! 😃 Can’t decide - Roman Missal or St. Joseph’s. I’d “grown up” with my old St. Joseph’s Daily, then put it aside for the updated one as Vatican changes were in process. More modern, and I’m not sure how many changes.

I remember the older missal (1961 or 1963?) seemed to have everything - all the prayers / litanies in the back. Even though I didn’t say them all the time, I liked having them at my disposal for whenever. That, in addition to having English translations of the readings, I’d like to have (Ordinary of the Mass I pretty well know). Thanks again.

I have the '62 Missal by Angelus Press, the St. Andrews, and several others, but I still lean towards the St. Joseph’s especially since my eyesight isn’t good anymore. The St. Joseph follows the Mass just as well as the others, but doesn’t have all the extra things the others have.

Just make it easy and get one of each. Live a little 😛

Seriously though, it’s all up to the individual. I’ve honestly never held a St Joseph missal and flipped through it, so I can’t really comment on it. I do stop by thrift stores and have seen St Joseph Sunday missals, but I’m looking for daily missals. I did pick up a St Andrew missal for 50 cents in fair condition, but it’s not the one from the 40’s. It’s the '58 revision I think. I don’t like the illustrations, but for 50 cents I can’t complain lol. I keep it in my truck in case I forget my Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962. I have to get up and rush to Sunday Mass because of my work schedule, and it has saved me a time or two when I forgot to grab the '62.

Why not make it easy and grab one of these ? 3 bucks shipping.

Heck, you can even get the DR Bible and the Marian Missal both for about the same price you’d pay for a Baronius Missal.😉
(well, a little more, but just sayin)

Am I missing something, or is the missal about half the price as on other sites? I almost would feel bad paying so little. but not enough to stop me

They are a non-profit family apostolate. If you buy one from a bookseller you’ll pay more. Their items are brand new.
