1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal - Do you have one?

I purchased Angelus Press’ 1962 Roman Catholic Daily Missal because I have a strong interest in the TLM (Tridentine Mass), and if it’s possible, I’d like to begin attending one… but in the meantime, I wanted to have the chance to just read the Missal, and learn more about the EF. I was curious about how many people here have a daily Missal, how often you use yours/read yours, and what your favourite things about the Missal are. Do you read it alone? With family/friends? Just at Mass? At home?

I don’t want this to turn into a “which version of the Missal is better” debate, so any Missal you have is fine by me for the purposes of discussion, although if CAF has a specific rule against discussing a certain group’s Missal, please believe I mean no disrespect and don’t want to open any cans of worms. 🙂 I started the thread because I’m really a newbie when it comes to my faith, even though I’ve learned a ton in the last several months… and I’m just trying to get a ‘feel’ for how other Catholics respond to the use of Traditional Missals. I’m not a ‘die-hard’ trad by any means – I’ll happily worship at an OF Church, love the Pope, and love being in the Church as She is, but I have a fondness and appreciation for Traditional Catholicism, particularly the TLM… and I knew that if I ever attended a TLM, having a 1962 Missal would make following along so much easier.

I have the same Missal as you. I use it for every EF Mass that I attend and for the morning Offering, Stations of the Cross, various Litanies. A Lot!

I’m still ‘exploring’ the Missal, and I really like that it has feast days, the Litanies, all the prayers, etc. 🙂 Each time I open it, I find another wonderful, helpful tidbit that explains one more part of my faith. It’s always like an unexpected gift.
 
I use it for studying, I use it to enhance my prayer life through a diverse richness of pertinent scriptures. I use it to get a feel for the ebb and flow of the liturgical year. I use it for the basic catechism type of things in it, including memorization of the more common prayers. For enhancing my Latin understanding and engaging in comparative readings of the English and Latin to do so, etc.
 
I have my great grandmothers missal from the 60’s and my 2nd edition missal I was given for my confirmation and Im waiting for my 3rd edition to get here.

I use mine at home for private prayer with the divine office. 👍
 
I bought one at a used book store for cheap. 😛

I like the prayers in the book for daily use. There are just some very beautiful prayers.
 
I also have a Angelus Press Missal. What I like about it is that it has the propers and ordinaries for all Masses possible. As a previous poster has said the prayers are beautiful. This Missal will carefully guide you into the extraordinary form Mass as well as Vespers and Compline.

Before that I used (and still have) the Saint Joseph Sunday Missal with the imprimatur of Cardinal Spellman. Also a great Missal but the only latin contained in it is the Ordinary of the Mass. Other than that the propers are presented in English. This Missal also has devotional prayers and lists indulgences proper to each prayer.
 
I have a copy of the same missal as you and I also have a copy of Blessed Be God. I would like to attend the EF form of the mass but it is not practical for me to do so.

I use these books to better understand the older Liturgical Calendar and supplement my prayer life. Many of the devotionals and prayers in these books have disappeared off the radar from newer books, I’ll use the daily prayers for the souls in purgatory from Blessed Be God as an example. I also usually substitute the versions of prayers from the older books over the new because the newer translations are horrible.
 
I have the Saint Andrew’s Daily Missal from 1954 I believe (that’s when the Imprimatur says). Its a fine missal though the ribbons are awfully worn. I received it from an old lady from Church who, though she isn’t a big fan of the Latin Mass, knew I was and gave it to me as she didn’t use it. If this one ever gets too battered, I’d probably go with the Angelus Press 1962 Missal, but I hope this 1954 one goes a long way.
 
I have a variety of Latin missals from 1962 and prior including the Angelus press one, the St Andrew 4 volume, the Saint Mary my everyday missal and a couple different Fr Lasance ones. I use the Christian Book Club reprint of the Fr Lasance New Roman Missal for mass. I probably use Blessed Be God the most for daily prayers.
 
I’m really thinking about buying this one, called The Layman’s Missal. It doesn’t have every day, only Sundays, Holy Days and major feasts, but it’s quite cheap, $20. I have the money to buy a full missal, but I don’t know if I’d have much use for it until I move to a place that has EF masses regularly.

One of my biggest regrets is that I long ago lost track of my old missal from the 50’s. I did buy a new 1962 missal recently and greatly enjoyed reading familiar Mass responses, the old names of the parts of the Mass and seeing the Latin text. I also enjoyed seeing the old prayers the way I remember them, especially the “Act of Contrition.”

Speaking of Traditional Latin Mass: since first hearing the “new translations” something sounded familiar. I mean what is new about “mea culpa” (through my fault) 3x while striking the breast, and “et cum spiritu tuo” (and with your spirit)?"
Doesn’t the “new” translation of the mass sound a bit like…?

I have been quite lax in reading the missal lately. 😦
 
I have one and use it mostly for the TLM Mass we attend nearly every Sunday, but also like the prayers and litanies in it. Our pastor who celebrates the TLM Mass each weekend also recently bought about 20 of these missals so anyone who attends this Mass can use it if they wish.

I especially like the prayer to St. Michael in it and also the prayer for America! This is how all of the old Missals in my childhood were, so that with practice everyone could follow the Mass. Thats why I don’t understand why some of the hierarchy like bishops dislike it. To me with all of the refugees of various countries living here, especially the Hispanics, celebrating the TLM Mass would put everyone on equal footing, as it did before Vatican II>

I don’t mind the NOVO Mass, especially with the new translation but I still believe that the TLM Mass should still be said.

That’s because if you examine it, the Order of Mass is nearly exactly the same as it was before.

Especially considering that many people erroneously think that if a mass isn’t in their language, then somehow they can’t go to it to fulfill their obligation.
 
I have a 1962 Roman Missal, an Angelus Press one. I use it every Sunday.
 
When I started to occasionally attend the EF Mass, I borrowed Mom’s old St. Paul Daily Missal. Her habit of stuffing it with holy cards and old invitations and pictures from various relatives’ First Communions and Confirmations weakened the binding, so I only used it twice because it is fragile now (it’s older than I am.) I decided to buy a Tridentine missal, and purchased a Baronius Press missal, because basically that was all the bookstore had in stock. I like it a lot. In fact, I got so “spoiled” that when the new translation missal for the Ordinary Form came out, I bought one from MTF. So I now have my own personal missals for whichever form I attend!👍
 
We used to have a $5 follow along missal, but since we last moved we can’t find it. Eventually we have to buy one again, I miss it!

I inherited from my dad a “Saint Joseph Daily Missal.” It has an imprimatur from Francis Cardinal Spellman dated September 15, 1950 and a copyright of 1950. I have no idea if this is the same or similar to your missal as I don’t know much about them and don’t own another. I have never been to an EF Mass and don’t know if I would consider taking this with me if I did. It is very tattered and fragile.
