While I doubt the authenticity of this document, it really isn’t that difficult to figure out.

If you are thinking it has something to do with the priest scandal, then you haven’t bothered to read any of the document at all.

If you read the “Preliminaries”, Item 1, it clearly talks about the Sacrament of Reconcilliation."

It appears to be dealing with the possibility of information disclosed during the sacrament being discussed or used outside of the sacrament. Remember, what happens in the confessional stays in the confessional.

The various areas that are boxed, or highlighted are merely an attempt to make it look like something else. It is called bait and switch.

I’m not sure how anyone could tie it to the priest scandal. That is what you were getting at right?

Since this portion of CAF is for “comparing and contrasting”, check out this site.

“The Associated Press reported recently that three insurance companies receive upward of 260 reports each year of young people under 18 being sexually abused by Protestant clergy, challenging the assumption that clergy sexual abuse is an exclusively Catholic problem that does not take place in other churches.”

ethicsdaily.com/news.php?viewStory=9149

260 X 30 = 7800 (260 cases per year for 30 years) Seems the protestants have some bad numbers themselves now don’t they?

There are plenty of threads about the abuse scandal, there really isn’t a need to start a new one based on a misinterpreted document now is there.

I have never said that it is worse with Catholics. I am trying to find out information because this is in all the newsfeeds today/tonight.
It is a question about response to abuse and really has nothing to do with the clergy themselves but administrative policy as it relates to purported criminal behavior.

I never ever wanted to start a thread on this whole horrible thing but I found this link through a headline on yahoo tonight and I guess I did not know.
Okay I have not followed this as closely but can someone point me in the direction of what is being said about this document? I guess I had not followed well enough to be aware of this:confused:

What is your question about the procedures for dealing with the canon law crime of solicitation in the confessional?

Can you summarize it in regards to illegal activity and legal responsibilities?
Thanks

That’s funny, when I google “1962 vatican document”, all the stories seem to stem from 2003-2004.

Most of the articles talk about how the document is dealing with the confessional, and how people are trying to turn it into a “smoking gun” of some sort. In fact, one article from the BBC talks about a “documentary” that was being produced, and how they were trying to twist the document into something it isn’t.

Sorry, all of this just doesn’t fly, if you know what I mean.

Other documents. For example, in the US there is the charter for protection of young people, etc.
Okay found that. Did similiar documents exist at that time to protect kids or other type situations? You are being more helpful than you know who. Its appreciated.

I really don’t know what other documents may exist from the 1960s.

??? Are you asking what the reponsibility of the Preist is to the confessor. If so, it is very simple. No matter what the sin, the crime, or any other thing that is discussed in the sacrament of reconciliation, The preist may not talk about it with anyone, no one, zip, zero. This has always been so, and will always be so…

Peace!👍

That is not what the document referenced in the OP is about.
