1964 English Breviary

Firstly:

I think the Breviary police are going to come take me away.

I finally purchased the 1964 English Breviary – and I have the offices fairly down-pat (got it last week). However, I used the current calendar in my head and forgot that the Breviary counts up to the Ascension from Low Sunday instead of Easter Sunday.

And tomorrow ain’t the Ascension for 2012.

And I thought I was doing do well – ugh.

Secondly:

1. Does anyone else use the 1962 English Breviary?
2. For Terce, Sext, and None, do I use the same little chapter as for Prime (when there is no feast or vigil)? I have been.
3. Should I say the doxology after the hymn? I haven’t been.

Are you speaking of the Baronius Press Breviary?

I have the Benziger Brothers, 1964.

I bought it because I found a very, very good copy – like new.
It was half the price of the new Baronius Edition – it lacks the Latin, but it is all in one volume and easy to carry about.

I use Lauds, Vespers and Compline in English and also have both the Extraordinary and Ordinary liturgical calendars. My breviary life is schizophrenic at best. hence multiple calendars.

Tomorrow, May 10, is the Feast of St Antoninus. Next Thursday, May 17, is the Ascension of Our Lord. Ascension is actually next Thur for the Ordinary Form also.

I found the little chapter’s specific to the season – they were stuck together.
I don’t think the book has been opened in 48 years.

And to my surprise – I have been saying the offices correctly according to the rubrics with the exception of the little chapters and being ahead a week.

I’m acutually enjoying it.

I do prefer the EF calendar, also the breviary version I’m using has the Confraternity version Bible readings which I’m a fan.

It would be nice to see an updated LOTH even if only with the Revised Grail Psalms, NABRE Bible and EF calendar.

1. Yes, in Latin, the Baronius now.
2. Terce/Sext/None never have the same chapter as Prime. Prime has a capitulum that never changes “Regi Saeculorum” and then an lectio brevis that changes by season (in Easter it’s now “Si consurrexistis.” Tierce, Sext, and None have readings based on the day of the week, but they change for feasts … it’s not the same as Prime, which is much less variable.
3. No doxology after the hymn. Doxology is after every psalm and canticle except when the rubrics say not to (which is after the hymn of the three boys from Daniel).
