1965 missal: how good was it--how bad was it?

I don’t remember any real complaining or whining, except my own as a rotten little kid 😛 who was mad because “I learned it real good and now they changed it”😉
And, I honestly believe, that NOT raising a stink was part of our “tradition”. As Brotherhrolf has said many times, we just did what we were told.

Now, with the internet and it’s inherent anonyminity, we feel liberated enough to let fly with our REAL feelings 👍

I’m not so certain it was the internet, per se. We “voted” with our feet in 1983 when we requested permission to join the Cathedral parish. (I understand that such permission is not required now.) I paid the price by virtue of a nasty interview with my local parish priest and the letter of “excommunication” that followed was directed to me. “If you die, I will not respond”…

I have prayed and prayed for all these years that something might happen and the Motu Proprio has started the pendulum to swing back in the opposite direction. I only hope we can establish some sort of equilibrium. Now does that mean I want to go back to the TLM? No. I don’t. Does it mean that I wouldn’t mind a sung Solemn High Mass in Latin every so often?

I keep going back to the same argument. I was in high school in 1965 - 1969 and I was happy with the Mass in Latin. I didn’t have long hair. I enlisted in the Navy. I did not protest the Viet Nam War and I was not happy with the violent introduction of secular music into the Mass in the fall of 1968. And, yes, it was violent - BAM!!! Out went Parce Domine and in came Sons of God. It was violent and it was traumatic. We tried to complain but were told to shut up because that was what HMC wanted. Now, my friends, how do you deal with that?

I, like so many of my contemporaries here in the conservative Deep South, submitted to the magesterium of HMC. Y’all can’t begin to even conceive of how frightening it was for us to even contemplate challenging the magesterium. It simply wasn’t done back then…

We place a premium on Life Teen Masses today. Don’t you think that as a teenager way back when, I could see that what was written in that 1965/6 St. Joseph Missal was not what I was experiencing? There truly is something to the words “silent majority”.

With the interent, I guess, we are free to whine and complain freely like I did when I was around 9 years old.

“It’s not what I remebered” wah! (“kim” age 9)
“it’s not what I remebered” wah! (adult interent user)😃

We want unity with our seperated brethen, yet we pull apart from each other:(

And it doesn’t help that you were 9. I was 17. Please read my post above. If we can fall all over ourselves with Life Teen Masses today, what about my experience in the middle of the whole thing?

What am I?: Chopped liver because I didn’t agree with what was being done? I grew up with the Mass in Latin. I made my First Communion and Confirmation before 1965. Wah? Wah? When was the last time you jousted with humilite, Kim?

I did not mean it how it came out. sorry:o I am one of those people who should lurk and not post because it comes out wrong. I have a limited education, an 8th grade education and no real formal Religion teaching except what my mother taught me and what I read later in life, so I really should not post much.
I simply meant in the past we more or less just followed along, no real complaining. I never heard a real complaint about any type of Mass until I read it on an interent. That’s all, sorry for any confusion,

No, not at all. You should not not post 😃 Bro sits back and says wow, Etowah! Big time Native American archaeological site. And you are a Catholic in that part of the country? Wow!

born and bred in Etowah TN and Cradle Catholic too. (My Grandpa came from NYC in 1948 when my mom was a teenager)😉
about the Native Americans,
The Cherokes were here until the trail of tears.
Beautiful country here.

Some of these threads remind me of the Middle East or Ireland.

🤷
Quite revealing…
In 69, we got the “New Mass”, or what I call “Mass, uncluttered”.
Yeah, prayers really clutter the mass. I mean God forbid if we actually try to go out of our way to worship God.

Mass is Mass. We have countless other opportunites to offer addtional prayers as we wish. Mass isn’t a contest to see how many prayers we can cram in one setting.

heh, you honestly believe that those repetitions were meaningless?

Perhaps we should try and understand the classical mass, before we ridicule it.

While you are trying to “understand” it, I’ve been “living” it for decades.

If you like repetitions and add-ons, then good for you. If I want extra prayer, I can do so outside of Mass to my heart’s delight.

The blunt, very blunt, reality is that we never used the 65 Missal. When we began the transition to the NO, it was, OK parish, in two weeks we will no longer say the Gloria in Latin. In two weeks we will not longer say **the Kyrie in Latin. **and so on and so forth.
Not to be nit-picky but kyrie is Greek
