1966 Mayknoll Missal

I came across an interesting book. Has anyone encountered this Missal. It seems to be an English translation of the 1962 missal with Vatican II liturgical calender. Was it ment as a bridge to the NO or is it an example of what Vatican II should have produced?

I am familiar with this missal. It contains the old kalendar, as the revised one was not released until 1969 and took effect in 1970, along with the Mass of Paul VI. The Order of Mass in your missal, often called the transitional rite, was an interim rite while the current Order of Mass was being drafted. It is essentially the Tridentine rite with the revisions made in 1965. These include no last gospel, shortened prayers at the foot of the altar, and the shortening of the words of communion administration to “Body of Christ.” The amount of vernacular depended on the local ordinary, but the parts of the Mass heard by the people were largely in the vernacular, with the silent portions, including the offertory prayers and Canon of the Mass, still in Latin.It was not intended as a final product.

The English translations were superior to what we have today, as the group responsible for the current shoddy translations did not begin to release their work until the following year.

Thank you for the insight. This little book has been a head scratcher for me for while. Not quite TLM not quite NO.

The ugly fact is that the Missals (of all stripes) were thrown out and of no use to anyone in the pews back then. We went to Leaftlet Missalettes. One could not use one’s Missal…It was far easier to use the Leaflet Missalettes.

Each week (or so it seemed) there was an announcement from the pulpit, next week we will no longer chant the Kyrie, we will recite it in English. Next week, we will no longer chant the Gloria, we will recite it in English…And as most of us know who experienced it, the English translations didn’t settle down until the mid-70s at the earliest with tweaks lasting well into the 80s.
