I was at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store today and found 3 missals: 1969, 1960 and one from 1931, I think. I want to talk about the 1969 missal.

That missal is post-Vatican II. The Ordinary of the Mass in this 1969 missal is quite different from what the Novus Ordo of today is. The 1969 missal is CLEARLY influenced by the TLM.

It seems to me, that Vatican II obviously did not institute the mass we know of now. At what point did it change?

For example:

1969 missal apparently encourages Latin for the most ordinary of parts.

Prayer exchanges between priest and server at the foot of the altar.

The Confiteor is from the TLM.

Only one epistle reading.

Creed: “I believe”…

The Offertory Prayer is similar to the TLM.

One Eucharistic Prayer.

No shaking your neighbor’s hand.

“Lord, I am not worthy”…3 times

While I can’t answer your question, I find it very interesting to learn that the 1969 Mass is so different than today’s. This is particularly noteworthy since the Holy Father issued his letter about using the Mass of the 1962 Missal.

I do remember some changes that were gradual. However, I was a pre-teen/teen during all of these changes and did not realize their significance.

Hope you get your answers!

The 1969 Missal is most likely of the rite that was used while the current Missal was being worked on.

I believe that it mostly was a translation of the 1962 Missal into the vernacular with some other changes.

Yeah, I wish somebody would shed some light on this. Honestly, the more I look through this 1969 New Saint Joseph Sunday Missal and Hymnal, the more I like it.

There was a missal of 1965 which was a hastily adopted transition while the committees were working on what became the NO Mass. 1969 may be the publication date of that particular book (just a guess). I remember the Mass that way, mostly Latin, lots of “smells and bells” but more congregational participation.

The 1962 typical edition of the Missale Romanum changed incrementally between December, 1964 and December, 1969, when the current missal’s 1970 edition came in. (Permission was subsequently extended until January, 1971 for the new missal to take effect everywhere.) The missal that you saw was the last issue prior to the new missal fully coming into effect.

Beginning in March, 1965, changes began to appear each year. A few years back I wrote a number of articles that explain the sequence of changes. If you would like to read about it in excruciating detail, please send me a private message.:coffeeread:

Do the articles explain the “whys” of the changes?

I know that others I know complained about buying their 1969 “Perpetual Missal” and suddenly finding a few months later that it was no longer correct.

It was essentially a Trent-ritual missal, most likely drawn from the 1967 transitional missal, in English. What many Americans appear to have been expecting at the time. the 1970 missal (novus ordo missale romanum) is dated on the pages at catholicliturgy.com at March 26, 1970

The 1962 was the final formal edition of the pre-VII mass.
The 1965 was the first transitional missal
The 1967 was the second transitional set, Still before my time.
the 1970 was the new Missale Romanum, often called Novus Ordo, still in use (with a few alterations, having been issued twice more since 1970…)

In some cases, yes; in others, no. I can explain many of the ones that were not discussed.

The 1962 Missal was the last missal issued editio typica until the Missale Romanum of 1970.

The 1965 and 1967, and 1969 were transitional missals issued ad experimentum.

The 1965 Missal was virtually the same as the 1962, except that is included an option for dropping the Prayers at the Foot or last Gospel if communal celebration of the hours happened immediately before or after.

This was then reinforced in 1967’s Tres abhinc annos, which reinforced and incorporated many of those changes permanently.

So, the 67 and 69 ad experimentum missals were the 1962, with the emendations. Of note, the 1967 and 1969 ad experimentum missals included Quo Primum, and the Defectibus, etc.

I experienced the change in excrutiating detail and tried to start a thread on it a few weeks back - which promptly got hijacked in the weeks before the MP.

I believe that a discussion of what went on, primarily between 1966 and 1969 might help put the transition from the TLM to the NO in perspective. Would you consider starting a new thread dealing with these years?

It probably should be on the Traditional Catholicism forum.
