Fundamentalists are stumped. St. Paul is giving an unjust penalty for profaning a mere symbol. A person risks getting physically sick by partaking of the Lord unworthily. Symbols cannot do this.

It would like getting a viral infection from eating pictures of a virus. Only a “real” virus can make you ill.
