Dear MaryKay - I am so glad to hear that you are trying to do the right thing with this relic. But what concerns me the most is that you say you are not a devout Catholic. I do not wish to take this discussion off topic, but only to say that I pray you will reconsider the Faith of your beloved Grandmother whom you clearly love very much. Surely if she is in heaven, she will be praying for your conversion. I will as well.

God bless!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, but I do think she should keep it. It doesn’t matter how she sees herself today. In ten years or less, it may be otherwise. I doubt very much that her great grandmother would encourage her to give it away.
I do understand what you are saying. But only she can decide what she feel is right for her. I’m not sure how much our thoughts or opinions may matter. 🙂

I agree, but she did come here asking for advice. Just thought I would throw my two cents in with everyone else. 🙂

I’m so glad I stumbled into this chat room; you all are so very kind. I have the highest respect for my grandmother and her beliefs as I am sure her beliefs molded her in being the wonderful person that she was. With that being said I do not share those same beliefs. I’m sure that would concern her as it did you so one her behalf thank you. I have her bible and that I will not part with so she still may save me yet 🙂 . The relic is not for me to own or my family I am sorry to say I think it would be more of a novelty instead of a connection to Jesus. I feel in my heart the right thing to do is to give it to those who would benefit from it, not store it in a box on a shelf. If someday I do change my mind regarding my faith I would not regret giving it up instead I would regret having kept it from those who would have felt its true connection.

You’re a generous soul, MaryKay.

God bless and protect you along your journey through life!

Actually Catholics can get first class relics directly from Rome. One can contact Rome and they will send these relics. Granted there are some intermediary steps in there but as far as I know lay people are not discouraged from owning first class relics. I know of one deacon who actually has many. However, as you are doing they should be treated with great care and reverence. There is also a seal on there that should not be broken that authenticates them. They are never to be sold though as you have pointed out.

Also with the incorruptibles. Most of the Saints that are considered incorrupt - it is not so much that the whole body is incorrupt - a part of the body may be. For instance a Saint that may have done many healing works in their life - their dominant hand may have been found to have been incorrupt. I don’t know anything about this particular Saint so I cannot comment.

No, I don’t have documentation but this has been my lecture on this from someone who is pretty educated and I am paraphrasing a bit. If you contact your diocese they will know what to do if you do not want it. They may make it part of an altar in a new parish if it has the correct seals.

God bless.
How does one go about obtaining a relic from Rome?
Thanks!

Amen to what Lomar said, Mary Kay.

God Bless you in your life and your journey. You honor your grandmother very well. 🙂

I do not know as currently I have been moving around myself and have not had reason to do so. Currently I have been bogged down with too many other things and it would not be fair for me to old on to such an item. Instead I have a third class relic of St Francis of Assisi that I wear around my neck. God bless you and I wish you luck in your search. BTW - what we are talking is more like bone fragments/chips then anything else just so you are not getting the wrong idea about having a grand piece of bone in your private residence. What makes it venerable is who it belonged to.

Thanks for the info. First, I had no idea that somebody could get relics of any order. Second, I have a place in my home where one could be kept and cared for properly. Last, the whole idea of having a relic never entered my mind. I though relics were reserved for alters and churches, etc.

Awesome - I wish you the best of luck. This was fairly new to me as well. God bless.

Same here, at least 1st class relics. But I was thinking that since hers is an older one that perhaps that has not always been the case… 🙂
