1st Communion on Saturday Morning

My 9 yr old son will be celebrating 1st Communion on Saturday morning.
I have a question.
Does the 1st Communion Mass cover our obligation of attending Mass or are we obligated to still attend on Sunday? I hope my question made sense to you guys. 😊
 
normally, no, it would not fulfill the Sunday obligation. Which is why parishes are strongly urged to celebrate first communions during the regular Sunday Masses. I assume his class is too big to do so comfortably in your church. The priest or whoever is preparing the children should explain about the Sunday obligation. Sadly, if your parish is like ours, not only will many families not come back on Sunday, but will not attend Sunday Mass with any regularity at all.
 
It does not satisfy your Sunday mass obligation. You will still need to go on Saturday night or Sunday AM.

Yes, the class is huge. I’m proud to say that most of the children along with their parents are very involved. Hopefully, it will stay this way.
I had to ask because dh and I were just talking about this.

No, Sunday morning will be his first time receiving as a regular member of the Church. Many RCIA adults look forward to Easter Sunday Mass, even though their long Saturday Vigil does not require them to come back Sunday. I hope this is the same for your son.

He (and his parents 😃 ) are excited. I have been telling him how truly awesome it is to receive Eucharist. ❤️
 
Frequently, the first communicants when they come to mass to receive Communion for the second time, they will come dressed in their Communion suits or dresses. It is a time for the whole parish to affirm their First Communion once again. I highly recommend it for your child as well. God bless our first communicants! May they always keep their hunger for Christ alive!

good point
it used to be that a child’s first communion dress or suit became his regular Sunday Mass outfit for the rest of the year (or until they grew out of it), certainly that way in my childhood and for my children. But that was before girl’s dresses became mini-formals, and before the men of the parish stopped wearing suits to Mass.
 
What an awesome day it was!!! My baby received Eucharist!!
Our parish had 60 children make 1st Communion. It took 10 pews (reserved) for them. It was awesome. My husband and I were moved to tears when our son received Eucharist. Many other parents felt the same. What an awesome day!!
 
Congratulations! I really prefer when the entire class has a special Mass as a group. And I think the children should be encouraged to come back on Sunday in their First Communion outfits. It makes the entire week-end something really special that they will remember all of their lives.

only if it is during the saturday vigil mass it would. in your case no, you still needed to go back saturday evening or on sunday.
 
This past Saturday we celebrated my older son’s Confirmation at a 10:00 am Mass and then my younger son’s First Communion at 12:00 noon Mass. They were at different Parishes (for reason’s not worth mentioning here).

It wasn’t easy explaining to the kids ( and my 3 others) that NEITHER counted for Sunday Mass. But we did end up attending Sunday Mass at a late afternoon Mass on Sunday (At a 3rd Parish) to spread it out some.

And lest I receive backlash, yes, my older son (confirmation) did understand but he is still a normal 14 year old who complains about everything.

Top
