Panic is a sign that you appreciate the enormity of parenthood and how it will effect your life. Perhaps it’s your body’s way of motivating you to make the changes you need to make (learning new skills, letting go of past hurts, etc) to be the kind of parent you want to be.
I had really bad anxiety for the first few months of my pregnancy. I actually went to a couple meetings of a local pregnancy support group. I was talking with one of the women, telling her how anxious I was about driving while pregnant, and that I was thinking about just taking the subway and walking for transportation. She simply asked me, “Would taking the subway really be safer?” It made me think: accidents happen, but are relatively rare, and the subway could be dangerous, too, with muggers, germs, etc. I realized that unless I wanted to be confined to my home (a bad idea for many reasons), I had to use some form of transportation.
I took this process and applied it to other things I was anxious about, analyzing the realistic dangers and weighing my alternatives. Along with a lot of prayer, this really helped me out.
Maybe a process like this could help you. Identify the specific things you are panicking about, then assess how realistic your fears are and what (if anything) you can do about them.
And never hesitate, however trivial they may seem, to lay them at the feet of Jesus.
