I attended my first Latin Mass Sunday.
I was truely wonderful. There were parts of it I loved!
Ladies with their heads covered. Eucharist recieved kneeling and OTT by a preist (a dream come true for me)!!!
The singing was heavenly. It sounded as if angels were singing 🙂

However, I did miss understanding what was being said.
Hmm…what would you think of a Mass that had all the above only in english?
Does such a thing exsist? Should it? Just a thought…

It’s the most beautiful thing, isn’t it? I’m so glad you got an opportunity to experience it!

For a few years, the Church produced a Mass like that, called the missal of 1965. You can look it up online, same text as the 1962 traditional Latin Mass but with modified rubrics and half of it was translated into the vernacular. Then we got the 1967 and finally the 1970 missal.

Of course, you may have noticed that almost everyone at the Latin Mass had a little book with the Latin and English side-by-side, so they understood everystood what was being said. I’d highly encourage you to get one yourself.

Oh, I should have mentioned that there the 1965 mass is not currently allowed, just the 1962 and 1970.

I would be thrilled if there was a 1962 Mass in the vernacular, because I think it would expose a lot more people to the old prayers that were removed in the 1970 missal. The old prayers are so beautiful, and express such reverence and clear doctrine. They are a treasure in whatever language.

However, because the use of Latin in worship has been confirmed by the Church generation after generation (including in the documents of Vatican II) I would still rather assist at Mass in the ancient tongue, myself.

I started with the last one, because it’s pocket-sized and much cheaper at about $25. In two minor places its texts are out of date because of small changes made in the 1950s and in 1962, but they never bothered me.

Haha, technically I started with one of those before I bought a Sunday missal. I read it over and over at home on Saturdays just absorbing the heavenly words in it, to better prepare for Mass.

That would be great. I still dont understand why it could not be done in english?
There are Mass that are modern in english? I do prefer tradition but I am very curious why it could not be done in english?
It seems like such a simple thing to answer the difficulties some have with traditianal Mass.
I hope this is not offensive. I am VERY new and learning day by day.

Me too! Someone gave it to me the second time I went to a TLM. I must have looked lost! 😃

The option to use the vernacular did not come about until after 1962, and when the 1962 Mass is said, it has to use the rules in place at the time. That’s why it’s never said in the vernacular.

So far the Holy Father has been happy to use the 1962 missal as it is (still on the pre-1970 calendar, too). If he or any future pope decided to change it, he can. Personally, I pray that the 1962 missal isn’t touched until the presence confusion in the Church has subsided.

Our church has little red Mass booklets available for use and return after mass, they are usually found in the lobby. If you want your own Missal there are a few different varieties available on-line; I use one by Baronius Press.

Vatican II allowed limited use of the vernacular, unfortunately some took that as an open door and eliminated all Latin. The Mass in Latin is universal, through the knowledge of Latin and/or the use of a Missal the Mass is uniform throughout the world. Today it’s often hard to go from one parish to another without finding significant differences in the Ordinary Form Liturgy, especially in posture and music.

NO PROBLEM!

Most TLM’s offer a Missal that has BOTH the Latin and the English translation in it so you can follow along. IF per chance they don’t they are available at most Christian stores.

I bought the Baronius press missal too! It is an absolute treasure trove of masses and prayers and I use it for prayer and meditation when I’m not at mass. I bought it here

and take extra delight in knowing that the money spent is probably being used to prepare a future priest to live outhis vocation. It is English/Latin side-by-side.
It did take a while for me to settle into the Extraordinary form as I tended to get a bit lost at first, but I used being lost to experience the mass in different ways (focus on what the priest is doing, try to translate in my head based on Spanish, praying or meditating along on one or two sentences) and really appreciate what it has given me.
Those red books were easier than my missal at first, and the print is a bit larger which comes in handy in darker churches.😃
Have a wonderful time getting to know the prayers-they have been an awesome source of catechesis for me and I feel that I am just beginning to scratch the surface. What an exciting time to be Catholic.👍

At my EF parish, they also have the white Latin-Spanish side-by-side missals, as we have a few who don’t especially care for English translations.

The Anglican Use, which currently exists, might be what you’re looking for.

I read along in spanish at my local Novus Ordo mass. It gives me a different sort of entry point where focusing on the language and nuance of the translation helps me get more out of my praying.
Do you know who the supplier might be for the Spanish Latin book? Is it similair to the red book or is it a complete missal with all of the collects and propers?
