I’m looking for a creative birthday gift for my 1yo girl. The problem is that we already own every baby toy under the sun. But I’d like her to have something to open anyway. The kids have already each picked one their own old toys from the basement, washed them, and wrapped them. I also have some clothes wrapped up. But I still feel like she should have some sort of special birthday toy. Does anyone have any suggestion for something “off the beaten path” that their 1yo really loved?

Rather than one more toy, why not give her a book? Or two books, one for now (cloth or heavy cardboard) and a special one she’ll grow into, so to speak. Tearing the paper is all she’ll enjoy anyway. 😀

So, I have a book problem the way that some people have a drinking problem, and it’s starting to cause issues in my marriage. I kinda already failed to exactly keep my Christmas pledge of not buying any books at Christmas. See, I didn’t completely break it because I didn’t BUY the books. They were free. There were a free box of over 30 American Girl books that a work friend was just GIVING away! What would YOU have done? Well you should have kept your promise to your husband which is exactly what I did NOT do. And the wounds are still a little raw on that one…so…no books.

How about a sippy cup or something like that? Maybe one with cartoon characters or an animal shaped lid or something?

Sippy cup, plate/spoon/fork for a big girl, socks, something useful, cute, etc, and hers.

1 share of Disney stock. IIRC Disney sends all stockholders a boba fide stock certificate that looks nice (unlike most companies with direct stock purchase plans where the purchase is basically reflected on paper and nowhere else). Set up the dividends to reinvest and by the time she’s 18 she’ll have a few shares. Disney BTW has seen its stock go essentially straight up for many years.

$147 as of yesterday. Not cheap. Best I could come up with 🙂

If you buy a stock certificate for a baby, do they have to file for taxes or anything like that? Or do you only pay taxes on stock you sell?

I’m not an accountant but I don’t think the purchase is a taxable event. Dividends can be taxable income but on 1 share its next to zero. Selling it is probably a taxable event.

Aside - there’s a great Peanuts cartoon where Lucy is griping that she didn’t get what she wanted for her birthday. Linus asks her what she wanted. She says “stocks and bonds!”

That’s a good idea. My grandpa bought me a bond when I was born for about $50. When I redeemed it a year or two ago, I got about $110 back. It’s not taxed at the moment you redeem it (so you get its full value), and as far as I know, you don’t have to declare that on your taxes (at the time, I was unemployed and had nothing to file anyways).

Plant a tree in her name - let her open the little gift card thing with the colorful paper. Otherwise you’ll just end up with more ‘stuff’ she’s not even going to remember.

My aunt started a charm bracelet for me; every milestone, every sacrament is celebrated with a charm. It is something I really treasure.

My dad started me collecting proof sets. Every year the US Mint comes out with proof sets of all the coins for that year; I buy the silver proof set every year.

Maybe get them a stuffed animal or a children’s Bible. When i was a kid I really like my picture Bibles.
