I was sent this message from a user on another site.

Which of the 2 concurrent popes in 1378-79 was “infallible” since both excommunicated each other? The Council of Constance solved the problem and elected a third pope. (See “Western Schism” on Wiki) This creates a huge crisis of authority because the council argued that they were superior in authority to the pope.
.
So which of the THREE (Benedict XIII, Gregory XII, and John XXIII) was the true holy father? Good luck!

can anyone help?

Keep in mind that only one guy can be Pope at a time. The other(s) was/were antipope(s).

In 1378-1379, it was actually Ubran VI that was Pope. Clement VII was antipope.

There was a Gregory XI as Pope, but he reigned from 1370-1378, before the time frame you mentioned.

You might enjoy listening to Steve Kehlmeyer talk about the history of this period:

(Just download the .mp3 and play it on your PC with Windows Media Player, or copy to your iPod or MP3 player, or burn to a CD.) 🙂

I will have to check that out! Thank you!

There’s always wannabes–some get more influence than others, especially when they were backed by powerful princes, dukes, etc. There are antipopes today with their own websites, but are generally insignificant other than as curiosities.

I’m not sure if we are allowed to give these guys any press in the forums. Are we?

In anycase search for “anti-popes” and you’ll find a list of them out in internet land.
