2 Cor 11:4 - Another Jesus

I’ve heard this cited often by anti-Catholics, but what are some theories as to the specific types of people Paul was referring to?

(Maybe Jewish-Christians? Maybe he didn’t literally mean another gospel, another spirit, but just others who didn’t believe in Paul’s apostleship?)

Thanks,
SG

Paul is specifically talking about anyone who preaches anything that is contrary to the apostolic teaching, which is actually an argument FOR the Catholic Church. In the RSV, the term he uses to describe them is “superlative apostles,” meaning that these false teachers could be distinguished by their pride, teaching that they’re superior to Paul.

Incorrect teachings about Jesus are what he’s talking about. Not Jewish-Christian specifically (you could call Paul a Jewish-Christian) but among Jewish-Christians there were some who would have believed and taught incorrect things about Jesus.

I’ve heard the term used by anti Catholics also who naturally aimed it at Catholics. They will twist anything in Scripture if they think it will serve the cause of anti Catholicism. It’s their way of Biblicizing their bigotry. Remember, a KKK guy will use the Bible too if he thinks it will support his racism.
