What is the theme of this passage?

Was it to test Elijah’s faith and Elisha’s obedience? Is there more to it?

There’s more to the chapter which goes on to tell us why Elisha clung to Elijah–because he wanted a double portion of the Spirit that had rested on Elijah. The Lord was testing Elisha’s resolve by having Elijah tell Elisha to leave him at various points along their journey. But Elisha would not be put off or discouraged. The lesson for us is to persevere in the spiritual life so that we too can receive all that God wishes us to have in him.
