2 Liturgical Qs?

Hi All!
This is my first, so I hope I do it:confused: right.

I have two questions regarding Liturgical Norms,
and hope someone can direct me to where I can find the authoritative responses.
  1. Is showing a DVD in place of the homily for Sunday Mass valid!?!
    Even if it is testimonies of “faith” working in individuals lives with an introduction by the Bishop?
  2. What are the Norms for placement of the Sanctuary Candle with regard to its proximity to the Tabernacle?

Our bishop asks us to show a DVD at masses once a year when he is kicking off the annual diocesan appeal. It is usually very good and gets the point across better than some of our homilists would. If the bishop requires it there is not much one can do about it other than be obedient and show it.

With regard to the candle, I think it just has to be in close proximity, meaning it has to be where people will see it so that they know the tabernacle is there. Ours is above the tabernacle. In a neighboring church it is on the wall that leads to the niche where the tabernacle is. In another church it is on a stand right next to the tabernacle.
 
Actually, showing a DVD in place of a Homily is a violation of the GIRM, and I think the Bishop should start to read it. The only time a Homily may be omitted is during Weekday Masses.A DVD is not to be shown during Mass at any point, period.

From the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) approved for the USA, which can be accessed from romanrite.com/girm.html :

“316. In accordance with traditional custom, near the tabernacle a special lamp, fueled by oil or wax, should be kept alight to indicate and honor the presence of Christ.[footnote 130: Cf. Codex Iuris Canonici, can. 940;
Sacred Congregation of Rites, Instruction Eucharisticum mysterium, On the worship of the Eucharist, 25 May 1967, no. 57: AAS 59 (1967), p. 569;
The Roman Ritual, Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass, editio typica, 1973, no. 11.”

Code of Canon Law: “Can. 940 A special lamp is to burn continuously before the tabernacle in which the blessed Eucharist is reserved, to indicate and to honour the presence of Christ.”

Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass: “11. … As an indication of Christ’s presence and as a mark of reverence, a special lamp should burn continuously before a tabernacle in which the Eucharist is reserved.
According to traditional usage, the lamp should, if at all possible, be an oil lamp or a lamp with a wax candle. [footnote 12: Sacred Congregation of Rites, Instruction Eucharisticum mysterium, On the worship of the Eucharist, 25 May 1967, no. 57: AAS 59 (1967), p. 569;”.

From the 1967 Instruction Eucharisticum mysterium:
"**57. The Means of Indicating the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle
Care should be taken that the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle is indicated to the faithful by a tabernacle veil or some other suitable means prescribed by the competent authority.

According to the traditional practice, a lamp should burn continually near the tabernacle as a sign of the honor paid to the Lord.[footnote 117: Cf. Code of Canon Law, can. 1271.]"

This footnote will be referring to an older Code of Canon Law, current in 1967.
