2 sets of the 10 Commandments

In Exodus 34, God tells Moses to write down these commandments:

34:15"Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same.

17"Do not make cast idols.

18"Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt.

19"The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons.

"No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

21"Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.

22"Celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD, the God of Israel. 24I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God.

25"Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning.

Not sure which Bible version you are using here. The 10 commands are different than the 10 that appear in Protestant Bibles such as the NIV and all. Here is what the Catholic believe as far as the 10 Commandments from Exodus (Douay-Rheims)

14 Adore not any strange god. The Lord his name is Jealous, he is a jealous God. 15 Make no covenant with the men of those countries lest, when they have committed fornication with their gods, and have adored their idols, some one call thee to eat of the things sacrificed.

16 Neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son, lest after they themselves have committed fornication, they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods. 17 Thou shalt not make to thyself any molten gods. 18 Thou shalt keep the feast of the unleavened bread. ** Bible are what we as Catholics accept. Those that appear differently in Protestant Bibles such as the NIV are according to Protestant Beliefs. So naturally there are 2 sets of the 10 commandments. Ones that Catholics believe and ones that Protestants believe.

First of all it would help if you gave book and as well as verses to which your are quoting and not whine about what some one else posts. In this case God is reiterating the words he spoke unto Moses

If you could learn to read, you would see that in my first post I stated chapter and verse. You are a very unpleasant and uneducated person.

I gave you what the Catholic Bible uses in Exodus in which you provided in your first post. I also gave that which was given in Deut. 5 as well documented. Your next post just included verses. From what book??? You didn’t provide that information did you??? I highly doubt that I am uneducated. Many people come to me about scriptural support. Hmm. I guess if I were educated I couldn’t provide truthful and accurate information that people want me to give. Also I am not the most educated person either. The likes of Dr. Scott Hahn, Fr. Mitch Pacwa and Fr. John Corapi have much further knowledge than I do, but I learn for them. Are you going to give me what book that quoted from in your last post??? All I know it is verses 16-30 in some book. You didn’t provide any other info. Why are constantly trying to prove me wrong when I am trying to lead you down the right path??

BTW you quoted what I quoted to you in my first post containing the words from Exodus. My 2nd post was from Deut. 5. But I guess anyone can overlook that I gave 2 passages similar

Neither are the anonymous persons who post in online forums. The link provides a wealth of info regarding the differences and similarities between the texts; which is after all what Christine’s question was.

The point is that with all projects that are open source everyone has access to modify it. Generally information is right. But there is always a chance it isn’t accurate. Wikipedia is disallowed to be used as a reference. In this case of the commandments. God reiterates to Moses the Commandments. The fact remains the same that Protestant commandments differ from the Catholic set.
 
Also in Deuteronomy Moses again was reminded after God gave him the 10 commandments. So this just simply reiterating what those commandments are
 
Also 2056 and 2058 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church also explains Exodus 34 in detail. Christine77, I urge you to read these passages. Not sure if you have heard of the Catechism or not, but it goes along with scripture along with other sources that benefit the Catholic teaching

The Decalogue in Sacred Scripture

Christine77 was asking about the difference between the Ethical Decalogue, and the Ritual Decalogue, not the difference between how Protestant Christianity and Catholic Christianity number the commandments.

Exodus 20, Exodus 34, and Deuteronomy 5 each contain a list of commandments that have been termed The Ten Commandments. The Ethical Decalogue is found in both the Gospels, and Pauline Epistles, albeit paraphrased.

This is not new; not unless one is a Fundamentalist. Critical scholars OTOH have been aware of these Ten Commandments for a very long time.​

That makes, not two, but three, sets of the Ten Commandments:
  • here
  • Exodus 20
  • Deuteronomy 5
    This is not unusual - there is a lot of repetition & variation-within-repetition in the first five books of the OT (AKA the Pentateuch).

Try looking in Exodus 20. You’ll find the familiar commandments there, as well as in Deuteronomy 5.

By the way, there is no difference in the Commandments in Catholic and Protestant Bibles in both Exodus and Deuteronomy.
