The sin of pride. David wished to know how big and massive his kingdom was, to bask in the glory which was God’s and not his.
Also, the census was very feared at that time, as it allowed the govt to exercise massive control over the people, and could oppress them greatly.

In addition, I would recommend that you take a look back at the accounts of how the Israelites ‘won’ the Holy Land. Over and again we see the assertion that it wasn’t military might that won battles, it was the will of the Lord and His action on behalf of his chosen people that won the day.
By taking a census – and by that, we see that it was meant ‘a census of able-bodied men who could fight’ – David is committing the same error that his forebears did: he’s buying into the belief that victories are won by horses and chariots, not by the hand of God. That’s where the sin comes in…
