Because you are in a literature class and you don’t want your teacher to find out that you didn’t have time to read it or it bored you stone cold so you didn’t pay attention.
Still no point in lying about it. You’d be shown up when you are asked a question about it.

I imagine for most of us, the last bell rang years ago anyhow.

Not always. I was able to BS through a few quizes. Of course, I usually read most of the book so it was easier to guess the parts I hadn’t gotten to. I don’t know why a person would continue lying about it as an adult though. I don’t think the questionaire at the begining of the thread specified that it had to be a continuous lie.

Here’s my 2 cents worth:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Read it & enjoyed it.
Ulysses by James Joyce - Couldn’t finish it, might try again with a study guide.
Moby-Dick] by Herman Melville - Loved it!!! Fantastic!!
The Bible- Have read it straight through over & over & over, in many different versions- it never gets old!
1984 by George Orwell - Awesome!
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - Good read.
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy - Fantastic!! Amazing!!
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - Great read.
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky - Read it, hard to get through.
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - Good read.
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens - Loved it!

I just have to say I am surprised to see “50 Shades of Gray” on the list. That seems more likely to be on a list of the top 20 books you pretend not to have read. 😛

😃

I don’t know- the way people promote it sometimes, I could see some pretending to have already read it just so that their friends will stop bugging them to read something immoral.

Such as, when a friend lends you the book, insisting that you take it, and then begs over and over “did you read it? what do you think?”. In this instance, I confess that I lied, but had heard enough ridiculous conversation about the book to affectively BS through my lie. Terrible, right? My friend, I should add, is one of the biggest Notre Dame football loving Catholic I know!

😃
What do you mean it was your “first novel”? It’s way too hard to be anybody’s first novel!

Certainly, everyone is entitled to like what they like. I’m currently loving her books, but it’s partly because I wasn’t allowed to read them before. And they are indeed much better than the stuff I was actually reading in fourth or fifth grade. :o
I read moby dick when Before I was ten

Wow that is amazing!!! Hope you do well with the rest of you’re reading.

God bless

29 days and I won’t have to lie if I want to say I’ve read the Bible. I’m currently over halfway done with my 60-Day Bible Challenge. Check my sig for updates.

Also, how the heck did Harry Potter and 50 Shades of Grey get into this list? Am I the only one who finds those out of place?
I agree. It seems like a list of required classics except for those two.

The only one I EVER lied about reading was Jane Eyre. And I didn’t necessarily tell a lie. I was a senior in high school and I was sick for quite a while and missed school. I didn’t feel like reading it and either the movie was on t.v. o r I had my mom rent it from the library. I watched all of 15 minutes and just wasn’t interested. When I got back to class, a couple of my friends convinced our teacher that instead of doing individual book reports, that we do a sort of play. My buddy and I were lawyers. To this day, I have no idea what the book’s about.

I always group it in with Pride & Prejudice which I thought was a sleeper.

OP - I HAVE read the Bible ALL the way through.

I think I’ve read 13 to 15 of them on the list.

Kudos on the Bible!

You’ve missed nothing on Jane Eyre. IMNAAHO, it and Wuthering Heights are as depressing as all heqq (I read these under requirement ).

There is enough grief in all of our lives without grieving for people who “die” without ever being alive. Again, IMNAAHO.

Thanks! One Lent I started a daily reading of at least 1 chapter OT and 1 chapter NT and 1 Psalm. It’s true what they say - the first 30 days were tough but after that a habit was formed. There were several nights I crawled in bed and felt like I had forgot to brush my teeth or something basic when I’d remember I hadn’t read yet. Also, this way when I got to the boring Numbers stuff, I had the NT to look forward too. I think once I finished Psalms, I did a chapter of Proverbs. It took me 1 year and 1 extra Lent, if I recall. Some days where a chore. But some days I got so caught up in the stories I’d read way more than just 1 chapter in that particular testament. There were stories I knew but small details I had forgotten or hadn’t gleaned from hearing it read at Church.

Funny enough - I LOVED Wuthering Heights. I think I was the only person in class who actually read the whole thing. Maybe I was in the midst of some teenage angst or something - I don’t recall.

That’s why there’s Cliff Notes. 😃

I was indeed very fortunate to have had such a man as my father. Yes, it is curious at the selection of some of the books which are force-fed at school. The life perspectives of some books are just so far beyond the psychological grasp of even high-schoolers, that you have to ask “What was this teacher thinking?” However, if you are going to college–where you choose your own classes–and you think that you are being “force fed”, you’ve probably selected the wrong major. 🙂
When I went to university, English 1000 and 1001 were compulsory for all first-year students, regardless of your intended major. And that’s how I got introduced to Margaret Lawrence’s *The Stone Angel. * 😦

I, too, had English 101 and 102 as mandatory, but they did not have required reading (excluding textbooks). It was mostly writing. The literature classes had the lists of required reading. So I guess that’s the difference. BTW, I had never heard of Laurence or her books. They did seem to create quite a stir in the fundamentalist Christian community, though.

We only have a composition class for the English requirement. That said, I’ve also taken a theatre class for a different gen ed requirement. Which is how I got introduced to Voltaire’s Candide. (So contrived… shudders) Nah, it was a nice class. Taming of the Shrew was interesting, even if the edition cited Ephesians as Saint Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.

I am sorry for rather strange message here, but I am running out of options.

I am writing to enquire about the possibility of your assistance. I am Polish university student and I am currently doing my M.A. degree in American Studies. My thesis describes the changes in the literary canon and reading lists in Language Arts after introducing the Common Core State Standards. I would like to know which works of literature and non-fiction are considered to be crucial to American culture and what place do they have in teaching literary arts.My research require teachers of American high schools to fill the following survey:

docs.google.com/forms/d/1Qqed9l1IxNwsdsr2qTcjKt-_ARiDQcQPlHvle2fwSzw

I would be grateful if you could kindly fill this questionnaire. It’s 100% safe, the link it refers to the survey that I create with the use of google application.
