I would love to see a study of those who attend Mass every week and Holy days, who go to confession regularly, who pray everyday, and who fast when required by the church.
I think this is a good point. I have become a devout catholic in the last 10 years. Before that just your average go to mass on sunday forget about it the rest of the week catholic. I used birth control then. Would not use it now.👍

This is what gets me, how are we suppose to be a community if Catholics are liars, hypocrites, and sinners? I know there is the description of the Church as a hospital, but you don’t visit someone suffering the plague if you’re sick with a flu; so is this entire hierarchy that is the Catholic Church built solely so each individual can make their attempt at the impossible goal of Heaven and just ignore the people around you?

So I agree with the person you were responding too, it tears at your sanity having to attempt to be free of sin when everyone around you are unrepentant sinners including the clergy themselves! How does God expect anyone to reach Heaven if his own “chosen” community is as horrible as the seculars and worst hypocrites.
So are you claiming to be perfect? Why does it drive you so crazy? Even God became human, you know.

98% sounds like someone pulled a number out of their ear. I’m sure a random poll at St Mary of the HappyClappy Liberals in Anytown, USA might get that number or something close to it, but that’s far from being a fair cross-section of the Catholic population.

Exactly. If I took a poll out in a rural community and asked how many were Catholics and how many had chickens. I’d probably get a 98% of respondants having chickens, and being Catholic.

Now would it be fair to say 98% of Catholics own a chicken?

I think these studies, especially with such a high number, is a load of rubbish. Granted, I do think the number of Catholics using ABC is probably high, maybe 70%ish - but that just stems from the people I know, and the community/parish I have been in and the general consenses.

Frankly, I’d like to see the Clergy take a firmer hand, and if we loose numbers because of it, so be it. Quality not quantity. We have future generations of Catholics to think about.
It is just that this area - sex and intimacy - creates confusion, pain, heartache, lack of understanding and acceptance for many Catholics. Church teachings on sex make zero sense to me and yes, I’ve read CCC and all that. Still makes no sense. Cannot reconcile it with everything I’ve ever been taught about God. Don’t want to devolve into finger pointing, assumptions, and name-calling. There is also the perceived difference in using contraceptives and condoms vs non-intercourse sex and intimacy. Bet many Catholics do the latter and do not view it as using contraceptives.

Our church has been quite frank about church teachings on anything, even with the teens.

Key word: “have used”

It doesn’t say anything about current use of contraception.

What do you think the number would be if it were % of Catholics who have told a lie or stolen something?

👍

I agree. I also think that if the numbers were true, perhaps the church should do more talking about how NFP works and how reliable it is. I know many catholics who don’t use it because they don’t think it really works.

98% of Catholics lie and are theves!

(well…at least when they were 7 …)

Again…polls…do not get me started! Just have fun watching all the political polls…

God may have experienced temptation, but he certainly never experienced the soul crushing feeling of sin dominating your life! He never had to worry that some being you could never understand would strand you in a fiery pit for eternity simply because you’re a flawed creation.

Anyways the total lack of concern for catechism from the laity is what bothers me, of course since I’m pretty much nearly on the same boat maybe it’ll stop bothering me in a years time.

Study by…

They are in business to promote ABC, do you believe their study?
I think the A for Abstinence is downplayed… these days it’s becoming a bad word.
(I think they’d prefer A = Abortion, ne?)

My attendance at the celebration of the Mass isn’t determined by an averaging of other peoples’ unrepentant sins. If I were to base my attendance on that theory of belief, it presupposes that I somehow own Christ and His Church.

Christ exists above and through the Church which is physically present on Earth.

In addition, by being at Mass, I don’t absorb the sins of other people. We are there to be absolved of our sin, to receive Jesus and to celebrate His sacrifice and Resurrection.

Reality Check:

A new comprehensive meta study published today reports that 99.9% of all catholics have told a LIE at some point in their lives. Moral theologians and aging hippies everywhere have initiated a petition to ask the Vatican to revise its archaic restrictions on the use of creative communications (which are only called lies by hypocritical curmudgeons).

Same thing, basically. Just because a doctrine is hard doesn’t make it of dubious veracity.

The bishops and the popes know about these surveys, presumably. And yet they do little to nothing to remedy this situation. This has been going on for 40 years now, and there are no signs of this ever changing. The bishops could order the posting a sign in churches or in the missals, “People using artificial contraceptive may NOT receive Holy Communion.” But they don’t.

It would be 100%. Everybody lies.

According to surveys I’ve heard of, virtually all (about 98 percent) sexually active Catholics in the USA use artificial contraceptives.
Here is a positive spin to a negative looking stat 🙂

The other 2% are probably Catholics with good families and the rest, those who are single in the US (which are a large chunk of Catholics) are practicing continence 👍

Do these surveyers spend equal time finding out what laws of their religions non-Catholics tend to disobey? And even if they did, what point would it all prove? Simply that people disobey their religious disciplines at times, whether deliberately or out of human weakness.

So what’s the point? 🤷

That being said, I do think there is an anti-Catholic (and pro-birth control, pro-abortion) agenda behind the proliferation of these types of surveys, and that the best thing would be not to give this stuff more attention than it deserves. It doesn’t change what’s right or wrong, so who cares?

Sort of like “Don’t feed the trolls.”

Here’s a 2011 news report citing the study citing the 98 percent figure: reuters.com/article/2011/…73C7W020110413
More than 35% of Catholics are under the age of five - so unless these kids are having sex and using birth control, there is something the matter with this “study.” 🤷

I wonder if I am correct to draw the conclusion that it okay to be a dissenter on some matters, as long as you are private about it. I don’t know what other conclusion to draw. Perhaps this is where God’s mercy come in. We adhere to the teachings we can accept, and God judges hearts, not by the strict letter of the law or doctrine. I don’t know any other way to view all of this and remain sane.
Dissent is never “okay”. Sin is real, and reaps natural consequences.

St. Thomas Aquinas:
“In order, therefore, that man may know without any doubt what he ought to do and what he ought to avoid, it was necessary for man to be directed in his proper acts by a law given by God”

and,

“In order, therefore, that no evil might remain unforbidden and unpunished, it was necessary for the Divine law to supervene, whereby all sins are forbidden.”
