 A Catholic friend of mine was telling me that she believes there will be a huge spiritual change in the world in the year 2012. Her reason for believing this has something to do the Mayan calendar ending that year. I have not researched this and was wondering if this is something that the Catholic church believes as well?

Absolutely not! Didn’t Jesus say ‘none shall know the day or hour, NOT EVEN THE SON, but only the Father’?

If the Father doesn’t even reveal the day and hour to JESUS beforehand, why on earth would He reveal it to the Mayans?

I realize that the Catholic church does not believe that the end of the world is coming in 2012, but I was wondering if they are teaching that it may be a spiritual year.

Every year is a spiritual year, every day a spiritual day. The Church does not view one year to be more ‘spiritual’ (whatever the heck that means) than another.

👍 Well said. Thank you! That’s what my reply will be when she brings up that subject again. Is her belief in this a sin?

There are a multitude of things that point to this year 2012.

The one thing it has helped me realize is that we should always be living in preparation for the Second Coming. If the world ends in 10 minutes…will you be ready to meet Jesus?

You can make 2012 a more spiritual year. I am not saying you should barter with God, but make a vow to grow exponentially in your faith by that year. Hopefully, that will come about way before then!

I would not focus too much on it…it will not be the end of the world. Only focus on it as far as that it COULD be the end of the world!

**You can make 2012 a more spiritual year. **

As has already been said here, why not make THIS YEAR a more spiritual year STARTING RIGHT NOW!

Sounds like your friend may of bought into the New Age movement’s heresy. I would be wary of anything she says

Its the year Britain will get third place in the Olympics gold medals table above Russia!! 🙂

Several non-Christian friends have said this to me too, also mentioning the Mayan calender. What strikes me is the complete arbitrariness of this belief. Why do they think it is going to be a “big shift in consciousness”? Are they Mayan? Do they know anything about the Mayan culture/ religion which produced this calender?

No. No one has offered me any justification for this belief.

People seem to believe it for fun.

Maybe they sense they are living in a world without true hope, and so they reach out to this?

Hi

Recently there has been a large focus on this year as ‘the year of the end’ or ‘the year of the beginning’ depending on your brand of belief. Much of it stems from a History Channel show on 2012 as the end of the world. Protestant circles picked up on this and are proclaiming it as the ‘Rapture’ year, other beliefs are using it as proofs for their own beliefs.

The whole underlying thread through it all, is the claim (I haven’t gotten around to researching through it all yet, so I say “Claim”) that people such as Nostradamus, Ed Casey, and the Great Pyramid, the Mayan calendar, several native cultures all have 2012 as the end of the world. Since many belief systems in the world do not believe in the end of the world as such, they have put it as a shift in consciousness.

BTW - if it were just the Mayan calendar, I don’t think there would be a whole lot of stuff going on about it - because people would probably say that was as far as they got before they fell apart…but since all these other people/places also have that as a special time, there a hubbub about it.

For all I know at the moment, New Age people could be saying that is the year the aliens will return…

Just my limited knowledge…

Peace

Follow the teachings of the Church. Not the mystical voodoo of a defunct pagan religion.
