I hope to have a good season this year for Lent. Can I maybe get some feedback from others on their sacrifices for this Lent?

I don’t want to do the food thing like give up candy etc… but I was leaning on the that are truly a sacrifice like so social media or TV to focus on reading the scriptures or praying, or making a commitment to do social charity work or volunteer at church each weekend. Things like that.

If anyone has some neat ideas I’d appreciate the help to make this season a truly blessed change needed to be more grounded in Christ and the church.

Thanks

This year I am going to spend 30 minutes a day with the Blessed Sacrament. I can only make adoration 2-3 times a week but can make it to chapels at other times. When the mood strikes me I can spend ages in prayer but I have tried the 30 minutes a day quiet and still in the chapel before and it just about killed me. I developed the urge to fidget like never before.

I am going to pray the Office of the Passion by St. Francis of Assisi. Last year, I hiked little a mountain most mornings and prayed Lauds up there. Haven’t decided on whether to repeat that.

Last year I also did the stations of the cross every single day and seriously recommend it. I used different booklets and then some days just talked to God about each station, his love, my own issues related to it, etc. I grew so much by it! Doing it once a week in a group is totally different from having a heart to heart with Jesus about each step of the way.

One year I resolved to do an act of charity each day of Lent.

It was hard, but oh my! did it open my eyes to the things that can be done, could be done, should be done.

It made a change in my life.

This is my first Lent, so I wrote up a plan on my phone. It’s as follows:

Lenten Game Plan:

Almsgiving:

  • Add $0.25 to poor box/church donation for every swear word. Add $0.50 for eating meat on Fridays.
  • More money to church.
Fasting:
  • No meat on Fridays
  • Cussing/swearing
Prayer:
  • Read Romans
  • At least daily Night Prayer
  • Daily Mass (?)
Penance:
  • For swearing: One decade per swear word.
  • For breaking the fast: Whole rosary.
I’d also recommend an hour with the Blessed Sacrament. I just started doing it last week, and there’s something so moving, so emotional about being there after you calm down and realize what’s in front of you.

Curious, why did you choose Romans?
I did a retreat for Busy Students last week. The last verse my Spiritual Director gave me was from Romans, and I do need to read my Bible more, so I thought it would be a nice place for me to start.

This is my first Lent back in the church. I decided to make it a Lent I would never forget. Here is my game plan:

Add In:
  1. Read 4 Chapters of the Bible Each Day
  2. Praying before I eat
  3. Pray the Rosary every day
  4. Pray for my Husband each day (10 minute minimum)
  5. Read at least one chapter a day of Spiritual book
  6. Start a Daily Journal (BE HONEST)
Sin:
  1. Cursing
  2. Taking the Lord’s name in Vain
  3. Telling myself I’m fat (or ugly)
  4. Sloth
Almsgiving:
  1. Donate 25 cents for each time I mess up first 3 sins
Give Up:
1 Alcohol
2) YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter
3) Limit Facebook and Instagram (Post whenever I want, but only check once a day and no more than 15 minutes combined)
4) Fast every Wednesday

I also want to attend Daily Mass as much as possible and spend as much time with the Blessed Sacrament as possible, but with my schedule I cannot fit them in every day this year.

I am doing this as well and looking forward to it. As a family, we have decided to give up fast food. My little guy wants me to also participate in something with him, but I don’t know what that is. He’ll tell me today after school (I hope). He’s 11.
