This is great news! He’s my son’s namesake, and the first person I turn to (after the Blessed Virgin) for intercession on my son’s behalf. I knew he would be named a saint during my son’s lifetime, but what a pleasant surprise to find it happening before my son starts walking 🙂

His story has been a real inspiration to me.
 
now lets put him to work on tougher job, transforming nominally Catholic colleges into the real article, a project I am sure dear to his heart.

Depends on what you mean by “evangelical protestant.”

19th century Anglicanism would hardly be recognized as what we consider evangelical protestants today.

The op meant that he was himself an evangelical before he gradually became more main stream Anglican while at Oxford. He understood the evangelical mindset very well, but later came to reject it. 🙂

I hope as well that he will pray for the Catholic colleges and universities which have lately become so liberal and even latitudinarian. 😉

Thanks for great news! I’ve been praying earnestly for the past 2 wks. for a miracle, but it was not God’s Will in that case, but I still rejoice that the miracle of the Deacon in Mass. has been accepted.

I do believe Pope Benedict XVI will eventually canonize Blessed John Henry Newman. 🙂
 
Wasn’t he already called “Blessed”? Is this something different?
 
Blessed Cardinal Newman was, as another poster stated, certainly not an “Anglo-Catholic” early in life. His early beliefs were certainly similar to those of many evangelicals.

Although, I don’t mean the mega-church-Jesus-is-cool-lets-drink-coffee-and-like-dude-totally-love-God-and-everyone-except-the-Catholics-have-a-valid-opinion-on-the-faith evangelicals.

It just goes to show how miraculous conversion is, and how God works on a person’s soul.

I like that term, bpbasilphx. Mind if I use it? 😃 It’s the sort of world that I came from, at least the fringes of it. I have friends at school that would fall under that type of Christian, and although people like that drive me nuts, “hell hath no fury” like a Catholic-turned-evangelical.

I mean this all in the utmost charity, of course. “Pop-Evangelicals” actually seem more open to conversion than most brands of protestant.
