I volunteer for an hour of adoration at our church. I have never done this before and as I look at others in the chapel, they have food and water bottles, etc.
I come with my Pieta prayer booklet and it fills my time, but I get distracted.
Are there guidelines for Adoration/

We have 24 hour adoration also…and although I don’t have a “set” hour, I have gone on my own and have found people with water bottles. Maybe for health reasons? However…one day a woman was there with her adolescent son and he was enjoying his Big Mac and pop w/ fries. I was a little surprised.

No desecration of the Eucharist… which goes without saying.

24 Hour Adoration is not part of the official liturgy of the Church (as the Rosary is also not a part of the official liturgy). Both are forms of personal prayer. As such, other than common sense, there are no official guidlines.

Some people are horrified that someone else would bring a water bottle or some food with them. While it might seem unseemly or improper, unless you ask them why they did it, you can only guess. It could be someone with a medical condition; it could be someone who has two jobs and is stopping in between; it could be any number of reasons.

The purpose of Adoration is one on one prayer time with Christ (“Could you not spend one hour with Me?”). I have seen some people say that if they saw Christ physically present they would fall down on their face. That may seem a bit on the other end of the spectrum - it did not seem that the Apostles did so even after the Resurrection, but what ever - and having a sandwich or a bottle of water may seem awfully familiar (on the other hand, Christ ate with people numerous times in the Gospel accounts).

Rather than worry about what someone else is doing, concern yourself with your time with Christ. It is a time for prayer, spiritual reading, just talking with Him.

An old man who attended Adoration was asked about it. He said, to the effect, “I look at Him and He looks at me”. Would that we could all have such piety.

Food and drink is a no-no.

Scroll down to Guidelines and Rules for Chapel Conduct.

I could understand an elderly person bringing a bottle of water. Some medications cause dry mouth. Personally, I would not bring it.

Any concerns should be directed to the Head Coordinator.

A while back, someone over on Spirituality told a story of how he and his wife had taken over the hour an elderly couple was having to give up due to their age. The elderly woman thanked them, and added “It’s such an easy sacrifice.”

It is indeed.

Besides for the obvious reason of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, church maintanance shouldn’t have to revolve around cleaning up after people have been eating before the Blessed Sacrament. I wouldn’t want to sit down where someone just ate a Big Mac. It’s not McDonalds. It’s pretty unbelievable that this would be going on. Maybe some signs need to put up, that say "Out of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, no food or drink except for medical reasons). "

Read, pray, meditate, watch, just don’t sleep. 👍

Try very hard not to look at anyone but Jesus. Bring your prayer book or other spiritual reading and tell Jesus what you are learning. Keep your focus on him and the others will fade away as distractions.

Our church Adoration Chapel has the rules posted. I’m pretty certain no food is allowed.

Water bottles?–I can’t remember. I agree that certain meds cause dry mouth and coughing, and also nursing moms need to drink a lot of fluid. I would have no objection to water bottles if they are un-spillable.

It seems to me that if someone needs to eat or drink frequently or on a schedule for medical reasons, couldn’t they excuse themselves for a few minutes to step outside? Or if someone is dashing in and has to eat their supper first, couldn’t they remain outside of the chapel long enough to eat?

Also, our Adoration Chapel has a foyer with a bathroom, a counter (for mission Rosaries, announcements, etc.)–a person could stand there and eat/drink for a few minutes, then enter the actual presence of the Lord.

We don’t have 24 hour ours is 7;15 a- 5;00p one day a week and we don’t bring any books, except prayer books or rosary, but the young children from the school were allowed their bibles.
It is hard to sit or kneel for more than 2 hours I think but anyone may take a break to use the facilities we just make sure there is someone there at all times during the time period and we have a sign in sheet and some have a prayer request notebook also.

I love adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament!

Perhaps it is because after years of being Protestant and staring into space and knowing Jesus is there but not seeing Him, now I can see Him. Yes, He is present in a humble piece of bread, but it’s really Him! He is here, with us. It’s so wonderful!

Question: Has anyone here ever spent several hours or even a whole day with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament? I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. How did you do it?

I was considering doing lots of prayer, including the entire Rosary and several other chaplets. I would also love to just sit and adore Him, Our Lord, for a prolonged period of time. And I would also bring something to study and ask Him to help me learn what He wants me to learn.

I would be very interested in your experiences with a “Retreat with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.”

Ths tricky part is choosing a day and then having nothing come up to prevent the retreat! I’m sure Satan doesn’t like the idea of a Christian spending a day with Jesus!

That sounds like a really great idea. I personally have never done it, but like you, would like to someday give it a try. We don’t have Perpetual Adoration, but I am so blessed:) that the church is unlocked and it’s on my way to work, so I stop in on my way every day that I am at work and visit with Jesus. In addition to the Prayers you could bring a Catholic book that you’ve been wanting to read, that’s how I got to read the books on Our Lady of Good Success was a little every day in church before work, no phones or any distractions. God BLess and if you do go ahead an try this let us know how it went.

Eucharistic Adoration is wonderful, yet if this is not available anyone can sit in front of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle in any open Catholic Church. The lit candle on the side indicates that the Blessed Sacrament is in the tabernacle. This is why Catholic Churches are usually open during daylight hours to be available for us to visit with Him. 👍

Are we not blessed or what?!!🙂

I have thought about it but then not sure if I could, go that long but the more I pray the more I feel in tune and then I don’t want to leave, the hour goes fast. It takes me awhile to actually get the peace but then I feel embarrassed if I stay so long I’m afraid others will think I’m brownnosing.
I think you and I are ready for retreats, don’t you?

I’ve been thinking of them, and didn’t think I could make it through so much praying but unless I really get quiet I don’t hear Him.
We should open a thread and find out what Catholics have done on retreats, what they are like.

What kind of retreat do you want to know about?

I went to a Life in the Eucharist retreat 2 years ago. One part of the retreat consisted of Adoration.

Still cannot figure out how to get quotes in those neat little yellow boxes and how to show just some of the quote! Anyway, I know when I made a Cursillo weekend years ago we as Candidates had Adoration with out fellow table members, and we had it as leaders when I worked the weekend. Does this help? God Bless.🙂

Well one that is in Wisconsin although I heard about one in Milwaukee real nice but I could not get to but was about 150$ for three days two nights.

Now I am not working. They do have some in madison my friend attends an overnight but she doesn’t stay overnight she comes home and goes back the next day. She is single and always has been, so now she goes to singles retreats.

An all day one I would be interested in.

The one in Milwaukee was a musical retreat even to teach music some, that I like. Dominican. I will make that one of these days and they said we could come for one day.

There is one in or near dickeyville that is Fransiscan.

More than likely I would feel out of place with very young women but I also like to learn.

I am learry of going to Madison even though that is our diocese because they have abortion clinics there.

I do like workshops so anything that would add to my interests such as running groups activities, music, prayer groups and silent meditation, or groups of chanting prayers.

Where do you go to get a list of retreats, I am near ill and Iowa And not to far from Minn and of course Wi.

I could not travel to MI or Maybe I could to IN?

We have a Holy Hour with the Dolorosary and it is the fastest hour of the whole week. It is amazing how fast the time goes by when you are with our Lord.
