Of the group, 96 were Vietnamese, 11 were Spaniards, and 10 were French. There were 8 bishops, 50 priests and 59 lay Catholics in the group. Of the priests, 11 were Dominicans, 10 belonged to the Paris Mission Society, and the rest were diocesan priests plus one seminarian. Certain individual martyrs were mentioned by name in the process of canonization: Andrew Dung-Lac, a diocesan priest; Thomas Tran-Van-Thien, a seminarian; Emmanuel Le-Van-Pung, father of a family; the Dominican bishops Jerome Hermosilla and Valentine Berrio-Ochoa; and John Theophane Venard, who had corresponded with St. Theresa of Lisieux.
 
…👍 …I had not realized this correspondant of St. Therese was amongst these martyrs until reading yesterday the Catholic Culture entry… ‘ironic’ that St. Therese longed to be a missionary, a priest and a martyr - all vocations…and that this was fulfilled in Father John Theopane Vanard to whom St. Therese wrote in support of his missionary call - it then occured to me that St. Therese and St. John Theopane Vanard would make excellent patrons of desires and hopes ‘unfulfilled’…

I was interested to read your post about St. Theophane Venard and St. Therese of Lisieux.  Therese was fervently devoted to Theophane, but she did not correspond with him.  He was martyred in 1861, and Therese was born in 1873.  She did correspond with Fr. Adolphe Roulland, a missionary to China, and with the seminarian Maurice Belliere, who was missioned to Africa.

Hi Maureen…thank you for the correction.:o I took the entry for the Vietnamese martyrs from the Catholic Culture site which states that St. Therese wrote to St. Theophane - obviously incorrect.:o :o
