At Mass this morning, January 28th 2013, we celebrated the memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas.

During the homily, Fr. David told us that he’d heard the radio announcer earlier this morning proudly proclaim that today also marked the 25th anniversary of the striking down of Canada’s abortion law. He said it was being announced as something to celebrate. He wondered what there was to celebrate about it being legal here to, “. . . kill as many babies as we want” ? He proceeded to reflect on today’s Gospel references to Jesus casting out demons and tied it in well with the demonic nature of abortion.

In concluding , Father said it was an invitation to each one of us to be more firmly committed to God - towards our Lord’s cause. He said we have to be careful that we don’t end up with a foot in each camp ; in Our Lord’s camp and in the camp of the evil one.

And in the final analysis, he’s right. The answers to any problems should always include our efforts regarding our own personal holiness - our own initiative to draw nearer to Our Blessed Lord as a friend and Saviour, a Brother , and subsequently to be more constant concerning our own spiritual well-being .

For anyone who hasn’t ever read it (or even as a refresher), there is an amazing personal conversion story - given first-hand, by Stojan Adasevic a man who’d previously been the leading abortionist in the former Yugoslavia. Interestingly St. Thomas Aquinas also plays a mystical role in this coversion. It can serve as a reminder of God’s abundant Mercy and of how the saints who’ve gone before us are just as active today in the Church. And hopefully it would further encourage us to invoke their help which is readily available in the Communion of Saints.

The story can be read at this link: Abortionist Turned Pro-Life Apostle

Mike Schouten , campaign director for WeNEEDaLAW.ca , wrote an engaging article which appeared in the Vancouver Sun entitled Canadians still grapple with whether abortion is right just because it is legal

He says
The cognitive dissonance between what we know about embryology and what we believe about abortion rights is rapidly eroding.
