This is incorrect as the diaconate is seen as separate vocation and not a stepping stone to the priesthood.
Technically speaking, all priests are a deacon before they become a priest (even Pope Francis was a transitional deacon at one time). It is called a transitional deacon though and part of the pathway to become a priest.

You are correct though that the permanent deacon is a separate vocation from the priesthood.

Peace,

John

This is true, however the only difference in a transitional deacon and a permanent deacon is the discernment to the priesthood. A deacon is a deacon is a deacon. Theologically, it is not a necessary step. But I was referring to the comment that, if the OP wasn’t married, he should probably become a priest.

True the deacon is a separate vocation. The stepping stone belief or the belief that the deacon is nothing but a mini priest stems from a improper understanding of the role of a deacon.

To my understanding the deacon is a support role or a service role. He embodies the footwasher servant image of Jesus while the priest is more the Shepard or guide role of Jesus. A deacon serves the priest at mass he serves the church (people and physical church) he would do things like handle finances of the church or buisness side of the cutch or upkeep of the church while the priest continues on his priestly duties.

I have always done the best in support roles or working behind the sceance. Now I am not afraid to lead or be I front of the masses but at the same time I have never been one to council or give a riveting speech or give a great sermon. Mine are more matter of fact. This is what it means here is the way it is and here is why it is this way and here is what you can do.However I am not one to convince people to go down the right path. I look at my skills and think what is the best way for me to serve God? I come to the conclusion I would best serve as One of Gods Servants not as one of his Shepards. I need to continue my decerning process though before I decide for sure.
