I’d really like to play a game published by 2K Games called XCom: Enemy Unknown. I’m torn, though, because a while back they also published a game called Bioshock. In the latter, there is a “resource” the specific details of which I forget. I think it’s a genetic thing. Wandering around are little girls…I don’t know if they’re insane or monstruous or what. I’m pretty sure they’re mutants or something. Anyway, you are given the option to save them and get some reward or (presumably) kill them for a lesser reward. I assume this is in the name of letting the player choose his “spin” on the character he controls, and there are different endings depending. I’m sure 2k doesn’t support killing little girls in real life so my quandry is this.assume they made a tasteless choice in trying to make a game more “personal” and buy their product, or boycott them?

It’s just a computer game, these are not real girls that are being killed/saved nor were any little girls harmed in the making of this computer game I’m sure. If killing the girls within the context of this game troubles you then ether save them or don’t play the game. As to XCom: Enemy Unknown I’d say play it but don’t listen to me, listen to your conscience and you won’t go far wrong.

Irrational games are the developers of the game aswell as its spiritual predecessor System shock 2. Bioshock aswell as System shock 2 are almost always included in “Best games ever made” top lists and that is because of how much the story and gaming personally touches us, making us unconfortable and invested in it. I see no reason at all to boycott them.

I don’t know about these specific games.

However, I used to work as an interpreter in mental health. Now granted, this was with people, kids, with mental problems, but one of the first things many counselors would do would be to get these kids away from violent games and movies. We saw, time and again, how much it affected them. Counselors came to have a list of good games they’d recommend and bad ones they would advise parents to get rid of.

Now, I know we are adults here without mental problems, but my question is …

Aren’t there any games, or series, that aren’t full of violence that we can turn to instead of these? Are there no healthy, non-violent alternatives?

… Super Mario Bros(and it’s current followups: New Super Mario Bros WiiU/3DS, Super Mario 3D World/Land)!

If you don’t feel comfortable playing Bioshock that’s fine, but the company itself isn’t corrupt and promoting immorality so I see no reason to avoid all their products altogether.

A boycott really is only appropriate if the company is using the money they make from their products to advance or promote an agenda that is objectionable. Which 2K isn’t doing as far as I know. The fact that they made a game with a questionable action in it doesn’t mean they support that action, as you already pointed out.

So you’re good. Play that game. You’ll like it. 👍

What?! And teach kids to commit genocide?! 😛

Seriously, though, have you ever stopped to question if all goombas and koopas are intrinsically evil?
