This is appalling. Someday maybe the Chinese will have the good sense to overthrow their government.
I once travelled with three Chinese priests. I was advised never to ask if their allegiance was to the state or to the Vatican, because one of the other two priests could have been a state informant. It’s even unlikely that any of them knew for certain where each others’ loyalties lied.

It not like they haven’t tried. Popular revolt doesn’t really work if your leaders wouldn’t think twice in squishing you like bugs, literally.
That is why our obligation to attend Mass is automatically dispensed whenever we are in China (Hong Kong and Macau not included). Because we don’t know who’s valid or not, and we should never seek the underground Church because we might put their lives in danger.
