We know that Jesus, the Messiah, was foreshadowed through much of the OT. My question is where is His 2nd coming in glory foreshadowed in the OT?

I know Exodus 34: 27-33 speaks of the radiance of the face of Moses after he had been with the Lord 40 days and 40 nights, and came down from the mountain.

The note in my bible says that the part where he wore a veil over his face is a symbol of the failure of the Jews to recognize Jesus as the promised Messiah. St Paul speaks of Moses and the veil in 2 Cor 3:7-18. All beautiful.

The crossing of the Red Sea on dry ground, with the angel behind them, between the Egyptians and Israel in Exodus 14:10-31 They left with their flocks and families and the wealth of Egypt, and they saw the destruction of the strength of Egypt when the Red Sea came crashing back on them.

In your mercy you led the people you redeemed; in your strength you guided them to your holy dwelling. The nations heard and quaked…while your people, O Lord, passed over…and you brought them in and planted them on the mountain of your inheritance- the places where you made your seat, O Lord, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands established. (Exo 15)

I feel like this also foreshadows the 2nd coming in glory. Does anyone else have an OT reading to point to that? It must be in there, perhaps hidden to our current understanding, until He comes again in glory.

Take a look at Isaiah 53 which describes the Messiah (Jesus) as a suffering servant who will be “cut off out of the land of the living” (i.e., die) (v. 8) and yet “shall see his offspring” (believers) - suggesting resurrection. On a more macro level - these same verses portray a “suffering servant” messiah (which is what Jesus was in his first coming), but other vereses point to the messiah as a conquering king - those suggest therefore a return in that mode.

Interestingly, some great Jewish rabbis saw the same dilemma and speculate in the Talmud (Jewish books of wisdom/oral law - revered by Orthodox Jews) that maybe there would be “two messiahs” - one who would suffer and die, and one who would be a conquering King, liberating Israel from its captors.

Blessings,

Brian

Would you say there’s a suggestion of the 2nd coming when Moses had to get the tablets of the 10 commandments a 2nd time and come down from the mountain again with them?
Exo 32:15-19 were the first tablets and Exo 34: 27-29, this time his face was radiant.

Wow - I have never thought of that before - very, very interesting 🙂

I’d never heard that interpretation before before either. It’s thought provoking.

It appears a little uncertain whether technically we would call this foreshadowing ; it’s more like straight out prophecy : Chapter 12 of the Book of Daniel is seen as speaking of Christ’s Second Coming, or as the footnotes say, the “final consummation of all things” … makes sense that St. Michael would be there too.
