Hello again everyone,

I know this may be another popular question, but i have to ask-

Can anyone tell me the main reason the R.C church removed the original second commandment -
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God…” and split the tenth commandment in the bible??

Please dont take offense at this question as it is a genuine question I have been wondering about for a while.

Just to clarify, the Catholic Church did not “remove” any Commandment. The Catholic Church simply numbers them differently (or rather, some Protestants number them differently than the Catholic Church). What you stated above as the “Second Commandment”, the Catholic Church considers to be part of the First Commandment. If you look in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2084-2141), you will see that the “graven image” clause is addressed under this Commandment (CCC 2129-2132).

So this commandment hasn’t been “removed”, it’s simply in a different place.

I should also point out (as Akin states in his article) that the division of the Commandmants the Church uses in the Catechism is not dogmatically defined, it is simply the traditional Catholic division. In other words, I do not think Catholics are obligated to use this numbering system.

The question you should be asking is why do Protestants split the second and combine the 9th and 10th?

BTW–you don’t actually think the chapter and verse divisions are in the original Hebrew, do you?

Don’t be too hard on the OP - a LOT of people think the chapter and verse divisions were there from the beginning, or at the very least that they are in some way part of what is “inspired.” This is even true of some “Bible teachers.” That’s why you get these silly devotions and interpretations based on something being the “exact middle” of some book or chapter, or elaborate codes based on how many verses before or after something, another thing is mentioned. And the OP told us he doesn’t have any formal Bible training or even any religious upbringing . . .
