So, my first question is this:
  1. I see these adds everywhere for “the devil inside”, i have never clicked on any of these because I am not a fan of the horror movies, even though I think it is a true story about a real exorcism (i could be wrong). Now it always says next to the movie title “The movie the vatican doesn’t want you to see” can you explain this?
  2. This isn’t exactly a question for Catholics, but for atheists. If the Catholic Church has never published a dogma that was morally wrong, why don’t you agree on their dogma of the teachings of homosexuality & abortion? & don’t tell me that these could be morally wrong by coincidence.
  3. I’ve heard of ‘Christian’ exorcisms, yes ‘Christian’ exorcisms, not ‘Catholic’. These don’t actually work do they? Because an exorcism can only be done by a priest, right? Though I heard how they do this is by intense/extreme prayer, which might also work ? Because any prayer to God, christian or catholic, is still answered, right?
I’m not sure, that is why I am asking you 🙂

  1. I think this article will help you understand, that the movie is an anti-catholic propaganda piece. It’s been compared to a bad Jack Chick track, and that’s saying a lot: The Devil Inside
  2. I’m not an atheist so I cannot answer that question.
  3. Jesus addressed this issue himself to his disciples.
[bibledrb]Luke 9:49-50[/bibledrb]

1.) It’s an anti-Catholic movie. Simple as that. And no, it’s not a true story.

2.) Regarding question 2, I’m confused as to why you would expect atheists to agree with the teaching of the Church?

3.) Remember, there is a passage in Scripture that deals with this very issue. It is repeated in at least 2 of the gospels, but I will quote from Luke:

9:49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”

9:50 Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

That said, the safest bet is obviously one properly trained in the Apostolic tradition of exorcism (i.e. an ordained Catholic priest with said training.) But we should not rule out the possibility that others outside of the communion of the Church can, in good faith, rebuke demons.

  1. It’s the hype of “forbidden fruit.” If you’re told that one in authority over you doesn’t want you to have it…fallen human nature is such to desire it strongly.
  2. ?
  3. First thing, exorcist is now a minor order which was intended to be instituted upon men, in general, training to enter the priesthood. Exorcism itself is a sacramental which these exorcists are able to impart to their “patients” some sacramental remedy or relief from extraordinary demonic activity. Since exorcism is a sacramental, it is governed by Church Law and tradition touching on sacramentals for those who are within Christ’s Church. The Church now binds in her laws that only priests are allowed to be exorcists.
However, those who are outside the Church, the Church does not bind to obey her laws, nor do they outside bind themselves (unless they are trying to enter). Therefore, there are men who call themselves “christian” who are not ordained as exorcists who do, objectively wrongly, take upon themselves the ordained ministry of the exorcist. When they call upon the name of His Divine Majesty to cast out the demons, it is doubtless that those who do so with the knowledge of the power of His name and the intention to use it are successful, at least in the short term, in casting out the demons. This was true, to my recollection, even of the Pharisees who rejected Our Lord to His face.

The fact is, though, as Fr. Gabriele Amorth details in his book An Exorcist: More Stories, these men are only able to cast out demons in Our Lord’s name since He left that power to His Church. It is to be used as the Church of Christ has ordered its use. Though, the fact that exorcism can be effected by those outside the Church is very similar to the notion that those outside the Church can still baptize validly, but that does not speak to the licitness or wisdom of the use of baptism or exorcism outside the Church in any or all cases.

Simple marketing ploy. Tell someone they shouldn’t do something and they will do it. Tell somebody a movie should not be watched and they will watch it.

Just watched this film. Laughable attempt at bashing the Church. TERRIBLE from a cinematic standpoint too (painfully predictable). The most terrifying part of the movie was how short it was. My favorite part, the ending. figured I would post here seeing as I am left with almost an hour of free time that my movie night failed to occupy.

I’m confused by this question. I’d say that the Catholic Church has published dogma that is morally wrong. However, while I disagree with its teaching on homosexuality, I agree with it on abortion.

I do not know whether any athiest thinks that the Catholic Church has never published a dogma that was morally wrong. Catholic Church has published dogma based on a concept that isn’t mine, so these dogmas could be right or wrong, depending on the dogma.
From the POV of the Catholic Church, homosexual relations are wrong because sexuality was originally intended for procreation and exclusively between husban and wife. From this POV, homosexuality is indeed wrong. But I do not share that POV, so for me, it isn’t wrong.
As for arbortion, I think killing is always wrong, so abortion is wrong too. But so is war. No sometimes it seems that war may be necessary to prevent a greater ‘wrong’ and abortion may also be necessary sometimes to prevent a greater wrong. That’s why I am botyh pro-life and por-choice.
