OK, we all know Christ was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver. That would be equivalent to how much money? Did Judas actually get a decent amount or just the equivalent of an executive order?

I asked this earlier this morning and got 1 response. I looked it up elsewhere online. The estimates varied from a year’s worth of wages to 90-days worth of wages. Most likely minimum wage.

It was the price of a slave (Jewish slaves in those times were temporary slaves).

Without Judas, how would the crucifixion have come about? I consider Judas to have done what he was destined to do, to put in motion the death and resurrection of Christ. I believe he would have done that for zero pieces of silver. I believe he and Jesus had a deep friendship that went beyond our understanding. Judas had his sad responsibility, which he carried out. The thirty pieces of silver reference seems a red herring. I believe Judas was the “midwife” of Christianity. What tremendous, profound bitterness he must have carried.

Jesus had an odd way of appreciating his act:
The Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born."
Matthew 26:24

Silver is currently $17.50 an ounce. It got to be as high as $50 an ounce in 1980. I doubt if a piece of silver was more than an ounce so the most 30 pieces could be worth-- about $500. That’s, what, about 3-5 days’ worth of work for many?

Odd from this side of the fence, but what about in the afterlife? I’d think Jesus would have been honored by Judas’ loyalty, not his so-called “betrayal”.

I have been told that 30 pieces of silver was the value given to a healthy male slave in his prime fit for the gladitorial arena…can this be confirmed by anyone? This of course was a Roman value.

I personally think, (Just personally) that even if Judas or any betrayer was out of the picture, that the Sanhedrin would of eventually found Jesus to be put to death.

Do you think Jesus knew it was going to be Judas all along? Jesus obviously knew someone was going to betray him. But was Judas predestined to be born as the one to betray Jesus?

For example…

Mark 14:20-21

He said to them, : One of the Twelve, the one who dips with me into the dish. For the Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born."

In His Divine nature, Jesus had knowledge of all, independent of time. How much of this He knew in His human nature is a question. However, St John [6:70-71] indicates that He knew it was Judas long before the Supper.
70* Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” 71* He spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was to betray him.

Is this guy for real??? 🤷

Should we assume Judas went to Hell based on the Lord’s remark that it would have been best for him if he was never born?

Assume or presume? 🙂

I once found out the difference between the two words when I read a banner inside a college chapel once:

“We all assume that one of the thieves at the cross went to heaven. Can we presume the other one didn’t?”

In Crossing the Threshold of Hope Pope John Paul II says that, while it sounds very bad for him, we cannot say for sure that he is in Hell. [Note that that book is a compendium of Pope John Paul’s thoughts as a theologian, and do not constitute an obligatory belief.] Unfortunately he doesn’t offer any alternative interpretation.

Interesting; I too always wondered about if Judas the Son of Perdition was redeemed after Christ’s Death and Resurrection. Perhaps none of us are meant to know. Of all twelve apostles only Peter and John experienced a supernatural event in the Transfiguration that verily could be held in similar supernatural comparison to Moses before God in the Burning Bush. I think we could all conclude whether we ourselves were to experience either supernatural event are very bones would tremble in indescribable utter fear. Yet would such an event make our faith in Jesus any stronger or less different than Peter who denied Christ thrice? Peter was human, Judas was human, as are all of us in our weaknesses.

I guess I never could quite understand Judas’s reason for handing Jesus over to the authorities. Was it only for thirty pieces of silver? And later Judas hung himself in remorse feeling guilt for what he did.

Judass sin of **DESPAIR** was far worse than his betraying of our Lord. To a greater or lesser degree, weve all betrayed Him. Judas would have been forgiven if he had had faith in Gods **DIVINE MERCY**. Its appropriate that next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday!
