33 Days to Morning Glory OK?

What are your opinions of the book “33 Days to Morning Glory”?

The reason I ask is this. Former evangelicals received into the Church this Easter. Wanting to grow in our understanding of Mary’s role in our faith. The intro to this book mentions a couple of things that have raised flags in my mind. In regards to total consecration to Mary as a " new way of life in Christ" and “a secret that most Christians don’t know”.

Thoughts or advise please.
 
I am a cradle Catholic and there were parts of Total Consecration to Mary that I struggled with when I read it two weeks ago, and I love Mary! Going into reading it I knew that it isn’t uncommon that satan will go after people doing the consecration to Mary. Read Taylor Marshall’s blog about the day he made his consecration and he believes there was a flat out demonic attempt to get him not to do it. I just asked The Lord to give me peace with what I was reading and Praise God I was given the peace I needed to continue on. I suspect an Evangelical might struggle with this even more but I do hope you persevere.

33 Days to Morning Glory is an excellent devotional book but probably not much help theologically. The best book I know of to explain how Catholic doctrine on Mary is Scott Hahn’s “Hail, Holy Queen: The Mother of God in the Word of God”

It is recommended by our diocesan catechesis office, and my diocese and our catechetical director are solid and orthodox.
 
Our parish offered 33 Days to Morning Glory (33 DMG) twice, last summer and fall. Sixty-nine in total consecrated to Mary on August 15 (Assumption), December 8 (Immaculate Conception, actually, December 9, abrogated) and December 12 (Our Lady of Guadalupe).

As with all things pertaining to our wonderful God, I don’t have the words to tell you how wonderful it is. It is life-changing! We struggled with a couple of concepts, however, the 3rd week of the retreat, a light bulb goes on above everyones’ head. Father Gaitley does explain in the readings.

All sixty-nine of us feel that way. In fact, we just finished the second book, Consoling the Heart of Jesus, (Sacred Heart of Jesus). This fall, we will do the 3rd book, The ‘One Thing’ Is Three, about the Trinity. “The ‘One Thing’ Is Three” is theology for normal people.

BTW, not all 69 people were from our parish. Although, we didn’t really advertise, we had a lot of people from other parishes sign up, and stay with us.

I also recommend that you read St. Louis de Montfort’s classic work on Marian theology, “True Devotion to Mary” (also known as “Treatise on True Devotion”). You can find it free on the EWTN library.
 
I think the book is very useful indeed, even if it isn’t exactly my own cup of tea. (I have to emphasize that this is purely a matter of taste: the information and presentation are both excellent, certainly far beyond what a dodo like me could accomplish.) I think I personally prefer the traditional de Montfort method, as I get more out of it in terms of understanding as well as spiritual devotion.

Something I would recommend as a supplement to *…Morning Glory *is a free, online archive of radio programs that were made by someone named Gary Zimak. Gary went through each reading for each day, and offered some of his own commentary and advice on what had been covered.

My personal opinion only – it might be a bit much for former evangelicals so new to the Church.

I think it would be better to start with (if you haven’t done so already) reading some of the recent Popes’ writings on Mary. I would particularly recommend St. John Paul II’s Redemptoris Mater: On the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Life of the Pilgrim Church. Pope Paul VI’s Marialis Cultus may also be helpful. I believe both are posted on the Vatican website.

these points are found in the original - True Devotion to Mary by St Louis de Montfort 😉 they need to be understood correctly… “new” doesn’t mean that it’s a new doctrine, - it’s based on Church teachings and Tradition, it’s just something that wasn’t really talked about before St Louis. Same with the ‘secret’ - I mean it’s true, many Christians don’t know about this, and before St Louis, even fewer knew. It’s still found in Tradition though! that’s an important point to remember… there are other things like this too - like the Sacred Heart devotion… it’s not something separate from Tradition, but many didn’t think about it before Our Lord began revealing it to the Saints. Private revelation can help to go deeper into public revelation and the deposit of faith, that is one of its purposes. Since God gives it, of course it has a purpose, - of course it should always be interpreted together with public revelation 🙂

I haven’t read all of “Morning Glory” but I own it, and it looks fine to me 🙂

I see what you mean, but if someone is a new Catholic and really wants to consecrate themselves to Our Lady, I personally wouldn’t discourage them because I made my Consecration as a new Catholic (and a former Protestant) and it really made a huge difference for me… I think it just depends if the person understands it, if they do, that’s a grace from the Holy Spirit. I don’t know why I understood it but at first I didn’t AT ALL, lol, - when I first started reading it, I felt afraid of idolatry etc. After when I prayed to St Louis and then Our Lady, that helped 🙂 so I think it depends, but I’d encourage the new Catholic to speak to their priest about this just to make sure 🙂

I also recommend asking questions if something in the book is unclear 🙂 pretty much all the questions I had about it before the Consecration were answered just by asking people and reading more about it and praying of course 🙂
 
Great book! I made my first consecration to Our Blessed Mother with this book. I started a few weeks before entering seminary, and later in the year, I bought a beautiful copy of St. Louis deMontfort’s True Devotion and renewed my consecration. You might need a spiritual director to guide you through that though. It is some pretty heady and intense stuff. God Bless!

There is help with St Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion, The Echo of God, a Commentary for Beginners on St Louis Grignion de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary. Wonderful, insightful book with paragraph by paragraph comments, explanations of archaic wording and 17th/18th century ideas.

For brand new Catholics, it might be best to wait. For all others, it is a very good parish program I facilitated it in the winter and 28 made their consecration. Getting ready for a summer session. Folks learn from each other too. So MANY of our Catholics are poorly catechized! We also finished Consoling the Heart of Jesus and even the 3 ex-nuns in our group loved it. Will do The One Thing is Three in the fall.

I have long been a fan of St. Louis de Montfort and thought this course might be too light weight but it was not.

I do have a Master’s in Moral Theology and am a member of a Third Order and do recommend this parish program for all but new Catholics who need to get used to being a Catholic first.
