So, I recently found out that the first Marian apparition was to St. James in Saragossa Spain in 40 AD.

“The first Marian apparition occurred in 40 AD while Mary was still alive. The apparition of Mary appeared to St James in Saragossa, Spain. She gave him a pillar and a wooden statue of herself and instructed him to build a church in her honour - Our Lady of the Pillar.”

My question is this: When did the Assumption happen? How do the people who wrote the paragraph quoted above know that Mary was still “alive”?

I thought that apparitions could only happen after the assumption.

Any ideas?

This is an ancient account, but it has never been officially endorsed by the Church.

You would need to cite your source, so we can know who “the people who wrote the paragraph” were

There have been many accounts of living Saints who could bi-locate (ie, be in two places at once - Padre Pio is a well-known modern example). This could account for this particular event.

I have read small-t tradition that Mary lived to 72, so if she was 14 when Jesus was born, that would put her Dormition and Assumption around 58 AD.

I just did a google search on it and found that page. It’s one of these:

google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4WZPA_enUS214US217&q=marian+apparition+to+James+saragossa+spain

I have never heard of an apparition of a living person appearing somewhere else. So, it’s a first for me.

I believe that St Padre Pio bi-located on ocassion but I don’t think that this could be referred to as an apparition.
On some of those occasions he was reportedly seen by bomber pilots in the skies above the town of San Giovanni Rotondo. That would count as an apparition in my book!
