Washington, DC – The national 40 Days for Life campaign continues producing live-saving dividends for the hundreds of cities where local pro-life people are praying and helping women outside abortion centers find alternatives. Organizers say that they can confirm 138 babies have been spared from abortion so far.

No disrespect intended, but could it be that the vigil folks are simply witnessing what happens every day at abortion centers all around the country? It is egocentric for them to believe that their actions have brought about 138 retractions of decisions to terminate pregnancies. To what do they attribute these changes in minds and hearts? How are they calculating, documenting and “confirming” the saved pregnancies? How do they know the mothers don’t simply drive across town to the next clinic for their procedures? Some will drive home, think about it for a day or two, and reschedule. There simply is no way to confirm the “safety” of the fetuses.

Women change their minds about abortion more often than many people choose to think. Prayer is powerful and I do not discount its effect in any dire circumstance, but I feel it is folly for these protesters to very nearly “take credit” for lives saved. They have no way of knowing the true eventual outcome of any one of these pregnancies.
