40 Hours Devotion - is your parish doing this?

Our parish will be observing this practice this coming weekend, and I’m really looking forward to it. I think it will be a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with Jesus, together with my husband, and then with our parish community during the pot luck dinner we will have afterward.

Anyone else belong to a parish that is doing the 40 Hours Devotion?

Our parish has a “Eucharistic Day,” which is common in our Archdiocese. Ours is on the Feast of Christ the King. There is adoration all afternoon following the last Mass; then at the closing, there is a prayer service and benediction. In other years, when we had a large choir, before the music director moved on, there was a choral evensong and benediction.

I remember 40 Hours during my childhood. There were special services, and at the closing, there would be 20 or 30 visiting priests. Our pastor hosted a very festive dinner for the visitors just before the closing Benediction. My mother used to help cook and serve the dinner, and she told me that not all of the priests were fully alert, shall we say, when they arrived in the church! 😉 Our pastor was quite the jolly host.

The churches I go to seem to be doing this… particularly Holy Trinity in Westmont, IL… ending with, I think, a Tridentine Mass on the eve of Thanksgiving.

Every parish in our diocese (Scranton, PA) has 40 Hours once a year (some small parishes that “share” a pastor combine for the 40 Hours). Our new Bishop (Joseph Martino) re-introduced this tradition a couple of years ago. St. John Neumann spread this devotion many years ago when he was bishop here (when northeast PA was still part of the Philadelphia diocese).

I think it’s wonderful!
