40 Years Later, 54,559,615 Abortions

Today being the 40th anniversary of Roe v Wade, I thought I’d share this recent analysis by Pew Research on the positions of various religions. Something I personally find interesting is that even though The Episcopal Church is often considered to be one of the more liberal churches, in fact it only actually condones the procedure in cases of rape, incest, to protect the health of the mother, or in cases of fetal abnormalities. But forbids abortion for birth control. I had read this about TEC here on CAF before. But given the church’s reputation for being one of the more liberal churches, I wonder how many non Episcopalians were actually aware of the TEC actual official position.

Actually the UCC, ELCA, and PCUSA appear to hold more liberal views than TEC. UCC supports the right of women to a safe abortion. According to Pew, ELCA does not believe abortion should be illegal until viability. After that point, then only legal to protect the life of the mother or in cases of fetal abnormalities. And PCUSA though disapproving of abortion as a means of birth control or for convenience, seeks to maintain within its fellowship those who, after study of Scripture and prayer, come to diverse conclusions on the issue.

I think the biggest difference between the Catholic Church and the myriad Protestant denominations is that even though many if not most of the Protestant denominations “frown upon” or are officially against abortion, members are allowed to hold differing viewpoints without repercussion.

I think you may be right about that.
 
Today is the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court rulling on Roe v. Wade. The National Right to Life Committee estimates that, in that time period, there have been 54,559,615 abortions in America.
“In a new document, ‘Abortion Statistics: United States Data and Trends,’ NRLC education director Dr. Randall K. O’Bannon estimates that there have been 54,559,615 abortions since 1973 based on data from both the Centers for Disease Control and the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, a former Planned Parenthood research arm. Guttmacher receives numbers directly from abortion centers themselves and is the prime source for more current figures because the Centers for Disease Control has never tabulated accurate numbers of abortions. The CDC relies on figures from state health departments, some of which rely on voluntary reporting — and it hasn’t had data from some states such as California and New Hampshire for more than a decade,” lifenews.com reports.

That means, “The number means there are more than 3,300 abortions daily and 137 abortions per hour every hour in the United States. Translated another way, an abortion is done about every 30 seconds in the United States.”

The LCMS church calls it a sin, including when done in cases of rape or incest. Furthermore, “It is a sin for parents to counsel their children to have abortions.” The LCMS states that after repentance,

It is important then that people who have repented of their
sin continue to remain close to their Lord through regular and
faithful church attendance where they will continue to hear the
Gospel proclaimed and where they will receive the Lord’s
Supper regularly.Private confession and absolution with their
pastor is another powerful means by which God gives His
grace,pardon and peace to a person feeling guilty over the sin
of abortion.The grace and love of God is stronger than any
human weakness and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us
from all sin (1 John 1:7).This is truly good news and the good
news that can and must be shared with those feeling guilty.

We stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters on this.
 
Our pastor gave a right to life lecture durning Sunday’s Adult Bible Class. This is one area that conserative Lutherans differ from the liberal Lutheran denomination. We are proud to stand with our Catholic brothers and sisters on this issue.

The sad thing is that Christians, of all types are in helping in those numbers.

This is something think about, a lot.
 
We see this all the time in the News section, I think some people come on to the Catholic forum, call themself a Christian under another faith, support someone like Obama who voted for Infanticide and like to defend abortion which is on the outs in a lot of state, no matter how they talk.

We’ve got to remember, big Liberal States and by the ways, one that are meeting with a lot of failure right now, Illinois, California and New York have a high concentration of abortions.
 
Right and for 40 years there has been a close divide in the USA. Just as was witnessed in this election. The so called majority is oh about the 51 percent, this hasn’t changed through decades.

Roe vs Wade is and has been ready to fall. And this year Pro-Life is moving even closer.

Christians believe various ideas on abortion.

Of course, of course, you do not have more adamant lifers than people like Michelle Bachmann (WELS) in congress today, compare that to some Catholics who we know are in congress or even our Secretary of Health and Human Services. Allen West, not a Rep. now but definitely very prolife and look how these people often get treated for being true to their beliefs. Wheaton College where Billy Graham went to college is suing the Federal Government over the ACA and the intrusion into religious liberty by the Federal Government.

…and many have Catholic in thier moniker as well.

I was told in an earlier thread that TEC supports “abortions on demand,” which is ridiculous. It seems that there are many misconceptions about TEC on here. If one visits any Anglican/Episcopal forum or message board, they will see that there is alot of diversity amongst the laity. In fact, a TEC conducted poll (2010) has shown that there is almost an even split amongst the laity in regards liberal, conservative, and moderate.
