When God said in the 4th Commandment that if you honor your father and your mother that you will be long lived did he mean that those who honor their parents will be rewarded to live to a ripe old age? Or does it mean something else?

Not to digress, but

What does it mean to honor? How do we honor our parents?

What is the relationship between honor and honest? (Seems to me they have the same root…)

I would view it to mean that if you don’t honor them and do as they say that you will probably do something stupid they warned you about and possibly die. However, it could mean that those who honor their parents will live longer than those who don’t. Studies have been found that show that in asian cultures where the parents are honored and they live with grandparents and extended family, life expectancy is longer and more people die past the age of 100. So, God may very well be saying exactly what he means.

One theory:
There’s something about honoring your parents, from whom you came, that in doing so, you honor yourself. By respecting them, you respect yourself. They are your origin. And so, by respecting yourself more, you are more in harmony, and calmer and healthier and more content. And by so being, you naturally live longer.

When we honor our mother and father, we in turn take the very act of parenting as a very “honorable” vocation. I think this in itself leads eventually to becoming parents ourselves. Therefore we will “live long” because of our children, and grandchildren and so forth.

Just a thought- maybe it’s honor THE Father, and THE Mother as in the Lord and the Blessed Mother- when we honor them we will live for eternity in Heaven.
