My brother-in-law, who is a Fundamentalist sent me the below email today about the “5 [c]rowns” mention in the Bible. But I’m not quite sure how to answer him.
God speaks of 5Krowns that we as believers should pursue daily.
Incorruptible Krown 1 Cor 9:24-25
Those who exercise self control, live a spirit controlled life.
Krown of rejoicing 1 Thess 2:19
Those who win souls for Jesus
Krown of righteousness 2 Tim 4:7-8
Those who kept the faith both doctrinally and morally and to those who love his appearing, who look longingly for his return
Krown of life James 1:12
Those who endure trials/temptations
Krown of glory 1 peter 5:2-4
Those who faithfully feed the flock of god; feed others with the milk and meat of the word of god.
These rewards of 5Krowns are for the purpose of determining degree of authority in the messianic kingdom (1K year reign on earth), not the eternal order as we will all be equal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried Googling it and only received Protestant sources.

God Bless and thank you!

Hi Phil. Well, I don’t think I can give you much other than speculation, but I’ll try. This appears to be some kind of dispensationalist type of theology; one that focuses on different levels of heaven or size of mansions or some such thing. It devises itself around this kind of merit system depending on your degree of holiness.

It depends on literal readings of verses such as Matt 5:19 and Matt 19:30 for example for least and greatest. Early Fathers generally understand “the least” to mean ‘not at all.’ I’ll use 5:19 as an example:

Here’s Haydock: “He shall be called; i.e. (by a frequent Hebrew idiom) he shall be the least in the kingdom of heaven; that is, according to St. Augustine he shall not be there at all; for none but the great in sanctity and virtue shall find admittance into heaven. (Witham) — Do not then imitate the Scribes and Pharisees, who content themselves with instructing other in the precepts of the law, without practising them themselves, or if they observe the letter, neglect the spirit of the law, performing what it ordains, not to please God, but to satisfy their vanity. (Calmet)”

Now read vs. 19-22 and you can kind of get the idea that even smaller (venial) sins will keep you out of heaven (which you need to be holy for). Compare this to Jame 2:10 here with the Challoner note:
  1. And whosoever shall keep the whole law, but offend in one point, is become guilty of all.
[10] Guilty of all;: That is, he becomes a transgressor of the law in such a manner, that the observing of all other points will not avail him to salvation; for he despises the lawgiver, and breaks through the great and general commandment of charity, even by one mortal sin. For all the precepts of the law are to be considered as one total and entire law, and as it were a chain of precepts, where, by breaking one link of this chain, the whole chain is broken, or the integrity of the law consisting of a collection of precepts. A sinner, therefore, by a grievous offence against any one precept, incurs eternal punishment; yet the punishment in hell shall be greater for those who have been greater sinners, as a greater reward shall be for those in heaven who have lived with greater sanctity and perfection.

But for the dispensationalist, they read that there is both a least and a greatest. So while your living in your mansion with the best golf course backyard and fishing pond, I get trailer 13 next to pile of junk tires. Hope there’s deep woods off! Hope this helps.

These rewards of 5Krowns are for the purpose of determining degree of authority in the messianic kingdom (1K year reign on earth),
Unfortunately, nonsense.

The whole of dispensationalism is utter nonsense.

At least, after many conversations with my dispensationalist in-laws and many attempts to follow a cohesive history of the plan of God, this is the conclusion that I’ve come to.

If one goes to the Blue Letter Bible and types in crown, you will get this.

blbclassic.org/search/translationResults.cfm?criteria=crown&page=3&t=KJV

Also, in their dictionary and as a secondary definition: metaph. the eternal blessedness which will be given as a prize to the genuine servants of God and Christ: the crown (wreath) which is the reward of the righteousness.

There was also a crown of thorns.

The Hebrew also gives more ideas.

A crown of thorns was the first that I thought of too, and noted it was missing from the list.
The crown of twelve starts around the head of the woman in Revelation is also quite noteworthy.

Overall, it seems to be a interesting topic to contemplate.

It’s crown with a C in the Bible and it has a figurative meaning:

“The crown **of the wise ** is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.” (Prov. 14:24) see also Matt. 25

It’s the crown of the wise meaning those that have wisdom; and the riches are the treasures of God/His words. See also rubies and *pearl(*s).

If the most virtuous Christians are rewarded with crowns of authority in the 1K-year messianic kingdom but afterwards are rewarded exactly the same as the least virtuous Christians in the eternal order, why be virtuous? It doesn’t seem worth the trouble since, when compared to eternity, 1K years is nothing. Sounds like a Christian minimalist’s dream come true.

Have you ever compiled a list of words like that?

I often thought that the Bible defines itself. In other words, that the Bible is its own dictionary.

If you have a list, could you post it?

THANKS!

Yes it does define itself Jim. Are you just interested in this subject or others because I posted the following example on another thread:

It’s called ‘the confirming law’:

“And the Lord said unto Moses, come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.” (Exodus 24:12)

And he gave unto Moses when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:18)

“Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the **two tables of the Testimony **were in his hand. The tables were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written.” (Exodus 32:15, also Exodus 34:1 & 28 and Deut. 4:13, Ezek. 3:1-4)

“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write *them upon *the table of thine heart.” (Proverbs 3:3)

“Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.” (Proverbs 4:21)

“Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon** the table of thine heart**.” (Proverbs 7:3)

Ezekiel 11:19:
And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Ezekiel 36:26:
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and **I will take away the stony heart **out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

“Forasmuch as you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.” (2 Cor. 3:3)

There were initially **2 **tables (“Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3) but verses after that say the table (as in one heart), and verses after that clarify it as ‘table of your heart’. Therefore, it means that God writes His commandments on the table of our heart.

The fact there were initially 2 tables means agreeing. Verses that agree (repeat each other/confirm) is the interpreting method to use for these writings. This method reveals the otherworldly component to God’s amazing writings. It’s also a way to determine if writings are truly inspired by God.

By this method is the heart made new as the stony heart (stone table/hard heart) is changed to a heart of flesh.

Would you like to share more pearls?
funny you should say pearls, it’s my favorite subject:

“Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of **his treasure **things new and old.” (Matt. 13:52)

"Where **your treasure **is, there will your heart will be.” (Matt. 6:21, Luke 12:34)

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.” (Matt. 13:44)

“(10)Who can find a virtuous woman?…(16) She considers ***a field *and buys it.” (Prov. 31:10-16)

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” (Prov. 31:10)

“No mention shall be made of coral or quartz, for the price of wisdom is above rubies.” (Job 28:18)

“For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.” (Proverbs 8:11)

Therefore we know that the virtuous woman (feminine sense) is wisdom (referred to as she and her).

“Happy is the man that** finds wisdom**, and the man that gets understanding, for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies; and all the things you can desire cannot be compared to her…” (Prov. 3:13)

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking** beautiful pearls**, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:46)

If wisdom is above and *better than * rubies - then she must be a pearl - therefore, wisdom is the pearl of great price.
