Actually, it was 71 hours, counting daylight savings. 🙂

I didn’t know where to post this. . .since fasting seems to come up here, I decided to post it here even though the thread is probably more related to “health” than “spirituality.”

So I did a total water fast and laid around, did some light cleaning, spent time with my kids and meditated/reflected on the capital sin of gluttony.

I have to say, after 5 days, I have had no veracious appetite return to compensate for the weight loss (10 pounds. . .probably traded some water for some fat the last 5 days)

I thought I would share with the forum how I broke the fast and continued to eat.

I began my fast at 1 p.m. on Friday and then broke it at 1 p.m. on Monday. I ate 2 slices of watermelon and some chicken broth for my first meal. My second meal was 2 soft boiled eggs, 2 pieces of low carb bread, and a bit of butter with salt/pepper.

I have continued with a low carb approach the next couple of days. I had some blood work to be done following and my urinalysis showed that I am in ketosis (Atkins dieters would understand this).

I feel many of you who only fast 24 hours are missing out on the “easy” part of it - after the 36th hour, the hunger goes away. My energy has skyrocketed. Mental clarity is up too.

I plan on another one in late May before our baby arrives.

No point to the thread other than to share. I figured many of you fast here so it would be a natural place to share.

Jesus Christ fasted for forty days…Fasting indeed has great effects to our life…

I’m no doctor but if you are pregnant then having a water only fast for several days seems pretty dangerous to the unborn child.
Did you get the all clear from a doctor before starting such a fast?

Scanner,
you did this fast while being pregnant?

This is foolish and dangerous for your baby!

Also, you should not be doing Atkins while you’re pregnant. You don’t want to be in Ketosis during pregnancy, because you’ll be using fat that both you and the unborn baby need. I’ve done Atkins and I know how well it works. But I believe that he himself says in his book, that you should not be doing it, if you are pregnant.

As a licensed health care provider and someone who has worked in the field of endorcrinology for 15 years I would like to tell you that throwing yourself into ketosis while preganant is very detrimental to the fetus. Ever heard of gestational diabetes? Even wondered why women are tested for it?

. Even a short period of ketosis can cause seroius neurological developmental problems. Also the Fetus (yes just another name for human child) is harmed by ketones.

The stillbirth and miscarriage rate skyrockets in uncontrolled gestational diabetes…this is due to ketoacidosis…

Also womens renal function is already slightly compromised during pregnancy (evidenced by edema in the feet) Ketoacidosis significantly adds to the renal stress. There has been quite a bit of information regarding the so hearalded atkins diet and its damaging effects on the kidneys…Why do you supposed the diet requires so much water drinking?

Shame on you for harming your child.

If you are the father of the child…NEVERMIND:D

Oh, and congratulations on your third child! Truly a blessing from God 😃

I am the father. I work in healthcare also and yes, I agree, fasting during pregnancy is not a good idea.

My wife has permission to eat anything and I run to Coldstone Creamery once/week.

(we aren’t saints; we are sinners 🙂 )

I am merely trying to get healthy for the baby. . .I am down another pound as I continue to eat low carb.

Not to sound preachy. . .but as a healthcare provider, you need to brush up on the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis.

It’s understandable confusion but you went on record here so I’m calling you out on it.

Ketoacidosis is a pathological state that occurs when diabetes mellitus runs unchecked.

Ketosis is a state when the body has not received food and during lipolysis (fat burning), ketone bodies are placed in the blood and the kidney filters them out.

I would agree with you here. Atkins may or may not have a deleterious effect on the kidneys. But. . .the problem is. . .so does obesity (a much clearer link than Atkins), something I have battled with.

The problem is when they researched it. . .the researchers didn’t account for the fact that the people being sampled, more than likely, also had a history of obesity. (ie: Obese people seek out Atkins diets)

But. . .it does come down to a decision of risk factors - which would you rather live with? Obesity? Kidney Damage?

Hard call. I’d probably take some slight kidney damage in exchange for normal weight (not that it’s that simple - if you understand research and correlating cause and effect).

Sorry if we went off of spirituality here but I think you would admit we live in a screwed up country where “fasting” is regarded as “weird and far out” but people go in and have lap-bands and their stomachs mutilated in the name of the Church of Modern Science.

BTW, if I recall the “lessons” learned here correctly. . .the way to connect with God is:
  1. Prayer
  2. Fasting
  3. Good works
(feel free to correct me if I am wrong. . .I am not properly catechized)

I feel probably all of us gravitate towards one of the three in our lifetimes. . .some to 1 (I am amazed at the professional prayers here) and some to #3, with amazing acts of good works and charity.

I feel a connection to #2 for some reason. I am not a good pray-er and I am not the most charitable person.

I hope fasting brings me closer to the Church.

I plan to meditate on Sloth the next fast. . .I plan to do a 72 hour fast every 3 months.

Phew, you’re the father, not the mother! Congrats!

The Atkins diet is a safe healthy way to lose weight. I did it years ago, and I plan to get back into it again.

One thing to keep in mind. Drink water and make sure you are eating your 20g’s of carbs per day. Some people think, gee if 20gs per day works, 10gs or even 0, would work better. However, it doesn’t, it will put you into a stall.

BTW, this web-site is the best for low-carbing. You’ll get everything you need to know, along with great recipes, so you can stick to your diet.

would agree with you here. Atkins may or may not have a deleterious effect on the kidneys.
Actually the Atkins diet has no negative effects on the Kidneys, there are no studies showing that it does. The studies about high protein diets having an adverse effect on the kidneys, were those done on people who had kidney disease.

Make sure you drink plenty of water, while your in Ketosis. After you get near your goal weight, you’ll come out of ketosis. Its not something you stay in for a life time.

Congrats on the rug rat. I got a good laugh with everyone yelling at you like you were the mother. I just kept my nose out of it until I read the post where someone put two and two together. People are so uptight and ready to lecture on here… it was humorous to say the least.

It’s okay - it’s why I love you guys/gals. 🙂

Preachy, holier-than-thou, the guilt. . .it’s all part of the Catholic package. I wouldnt’ have it any other way.👍

And thanks. . .I confess. . .this has been an unwanted pregnancy. . .but I guess God gives you 9 months to have you get used to the idea. We talked names a few days ago and are starting to have a little excitement about it.

I have a strange feeling about this baby - God may have sent him to us to save our lives. I am taking care of myself better - fasting, better diet, a baby aspirin per day and some flaxseed. Pondering our spirituality also (to try to stay with the theme here).

I am down another pound also.

There appears to be a big, but subtle, difference between fasting and crash dieting.
