What are the five nonnegotiable teachings of the Catholic Church? Are priests instructed to talk about them at any time during the liturgical year?

Thank you.

I have never heard that phrase before.

All of the *de fide *dogmas of the Church are “non-negotiable” and there are more than 5 of those.

There are some teachings that can be debated within limits. But anything taught by the ordinary magisterium of the Church is binding on all of the Faithful.

I think the five non-negotiables is from the Catholic Answers voters guide. You should probably ask about that over in the Politics section.

In North Texas our Bishop says
  1. Abortion
  2. Abortion
  3. Abortion
  4. Abortion
  5. Abortion
Outside north Texas
  1. Abortion
  2. Euthanasia
  3. Embryonic Stem cell research
  4. Human Cloning
  5. Homosexual Marriage
Some other Bishops agree with the first part

But who exactly categorized these “five non-negotiables?” Didn’t the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops put out a statement about voting which lists more factors to consider than just those five? And please, for the love of Mike, don’t deluge me with posts about how abortion is the most important issue. I know abortion is the most important issue. That isn’t my question. My question is, who decided on these particular “five non-negotiables”? Has any bishop given his imprimateur to a voter’s guide describing these issues as the “five non-negotiables?”

As Joe mentioned, the “five non-negotiables” were determined by the political division of Catholic Answers. I can’t rule out a bishop granting his imprimatur, but usually that appears at the beginning of a document, and I couldn’t find one in the Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics.
A “serious Catholic” should insist upon an imprimatur on any document claiming to assert what serious Catholics should do. Why not just print a brochure of the U.S. bishops’ official statement on voting?

The pastor at my parish just said that we could not distribute the “Voters Guide for Serious Catholics” because it does not have an imprimatur or nihil obstat.

Even though it contains quotes and references from 7 different doctrinal texts from the Vatican, he contends that the 5 non-negotiables are cherry-picked.

His bone of contention was the first 4 are fine, because they are all life issues, which is first in the hierarchy of Catholic social teachings - but homosexual “marriage” is one interpretation of one aspect of the “family life” social teaching. His concern is: why this one issue? why not something about the environment or the homeless? Odd, that if there were just 4 non-negotiables, he may not have had a problem with it.

Anyway, is there any news about why there has not yet been an imprimatur or nihil obstat granted to the Voters Guide by any bishop anywhere in America? Have they tried and been given any reasons why not?

I vote my conscious. I do not believe there is a place for the Church to “instruct” me how to vote. I will live with the consequences. Life can not, in my estimation, be boiled to five singular non negotiables.

Dying with the consequences could be a serious problem, tho.

Just sayin’…

There were only five non-negotiables?!

These are the ones that I see the Church has been stuck with since, say, the 1960s that seems to get the most media attention regarding the Church not budging.
  1. No abortion.
  2. No birth control.
  3. No sex before marriage.
  4. No married priests.
  5. No women priests.
(I know these are not THE non-negotiables).

Not very non-negotiable.

About 20% of Catholic Priests are married; mostly Eastern Catholic Priests outside of the Latin Rite; and Anglican and Lutheran Priests who have converted.

He doesn’t. They don’t. However you want to believe they do so why let reality get in the way of a debating point?

Your position is pretty much exactly what the US bishops said in their document on voting. Of course, they took quite a few pages to say the same thing.

Also, I’m not sure God has time to worry about who is running for every public office in every city, county, state, country, etc. There are a few more pressing issues for God to spend his time on.

The second “group” are example of LIFE issues. Not saying the first group of one issue is not, but euthanasia, Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Human Cloning and Homosexual Marriage were all more hidden agenda issues in the last POTUS run off. They all carry the same moral weight. All five are non-negotiable issues, ie, they are all Intrinsically Evil.

I think God has delegated us to be aware of what is going on in Society and do what we can to stem the tide of paganism that is creeping up on us at a faster and faster rate.

The five non negotiables were on the front moral burner this past POTUS election. There are many more non negotiable, but these were the ones to be voted against.

Your pastor is wrong. Homosexual marriage is a LIFE issue. as are the other four ie. no human life can result from a homosexual “union”. if our pastors can’t get it straight, how can the ordinary Catholic/Christian even begin to discern the hierarchies of Good and evil. Heaven help us.
