STEUBENVILLE - A new cathedral to replace five churches in the city is being proposed by a task force of the Catholic Diocese of Steubenville today.
The task force recommends closure of Holy Name Cathedral, St. Anthony’s, St. Stanislaus, Holy Rosary and St. Pius X and a merger of those congregations and the Servants of Christ the King community, which does not have a building and grounds, into a new cathedral on St. John’s Heights.
A three-week written response period for parishioners opens today with the publication of the plan in the diocesan newspaper, The Steubenville Register.
A questionnaire for parishioners is included in today’s diocesan release, but parishioners are advised to read the plan in its entirety before making written comments. The questionnaire includes space for comments on the education and formation; family life and ministry; liturgy; new evangelization; and social justice, ecumenism and interreligious portions of the plan. The liturgy committee of the task force included in its findings the reduction of the number of parishes and establishment of the new cathedral.
The comment document states, "While the Pastoral Plan will not be changed in substance, parishioners’ comments may help to strengthen the plan or clarifying points."
