Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble:
As a former atheist, I can tell you that God used many holy people to bring me back into the Church. But the devil also used people with traces of “toxic faith” to push me away. And sometimes, those people were one in the same. We are all compromised in our ability to evangelize well because we are sinners. And we all have traces of a toxic faith within us. If the devil can’t get us out of the Church, he tries his best to poison our faith life.

Here are some signs of toxic faith that I have noticed (and to be clear, this is not about pointing fingers but an examination of conscience for us all, including myself):
aleteia.org/2016/09/06/5-warning-signs-of-a-toxic-faith/

There’s some truth in the article, but upon skimming the five “warning signs” (I admit I skipped to the topic given by the title), I wonder if the author is expecting too much of humanity. Nobody is perfect, not even Catholics. 🤷

There is a lot of truth in this.
But there is a lot of tendency to ignore
the heart breaking issues of our time.
For example, Dr. Ralph Martin is a joyful Catholic;
but he makes clear the dire straits of our time
that is similar to Roman Empire times, but
without the killing in nations that are more free.
Reaching out with love, joy, and true concern is what Jesus called for.
A person doesn’t have to use terms like liberal or conservative;
just address the dire natural moral law/ Godly moral law of our time.
Many are called to convey these things. Everyone is called to address them
in ‘We The People.’ Avoidance of these things of great importance
does not help souls.
Creatively prudently compassionately conveying them does inform,
plant seeds, and aid the Holy Spirit in convincing some.

Well I got all 5…
Forgive me for laughing at your post. :hug3:

I don’t think there is anyone here that hasn’t at one time or another.

We keep trying no matter how many times we fall, and pray for the grace to keep on keeping on until the end. 👍👍👍

Nice list to read and keep as an internal check list. Thanks for posting it.

I never read these things; it is like the lists of eg cancer symptoms. Or “bad foods>” You can worry yourself slly with these self diagnosis lists…
Um, no dear. This particular list is a checkpoint for spiritual growth. If you’d take a look at the article instead of assuming it’s a physical health warning, you’ll see there is nothing on that list that should worry anyone silly…

I thought she was trying to make a point, not that she thought the article was about toxic food.:confused:
But, maybe I’m wrong. :compcoff:

Pope Francis taught that we ought to be concerned if we take the role of judging people in their entrance to the Kingdom. For if we do this we open up our souls to ask for the divine judgment. He said this in light of what the Gospel says,

“Judge not, that you may not be judged, For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Mt 7:1-2)

In my opinion, the article encourages us to judge others in that critical role. Extreme simplicity forbids it.

Sister’s intentions were quite clear. Let me quote the relevant part again:
to be clear, this is not about pointing fingers but an examination of conscience for us all, including myself
A little further:
Did you recognize yourself in any of these descriptions?
If so, don’t despair (or kill the messenger)!
Take a moment now to pause and ask God for help in this area. Bring these things to confession the next time you go. Ask trusted friends for advice. And finally, trust that God is at work in you, just as he is in each of us, helping to purify our faith so that we can become more like him.

It seems like a very good article, like an examination of conscience dealing with the spiritual life in general.
