PLEASE HELP!! What are the “5 Works of the Holy Spirit”? This is something to which I was never exposed; I know the gifts & fruits, but not the works! I can’t find this answer anywhere.

I figured if anyone knows the answer, it will be some of you good folks! This is for my grade 11/12 apologetics class (I’m the teacher!).

Thanks & God bless!

Sister H.

Hi Sister

You can find them in Isaiah 11:2-3:

Actually there are seven:
  1. Wisdom
  2. Understand
  3. Counsel
  4. Fortitude
  5. Kissing
  6. Piety
  7. Fear (Reverence)of the Lord
A good memory tool to remember them is this sentence:
“Will U Check For Kissing People Lord”

Hi!

Well, I’m not entirely sure, but wikianswers (probably not the best source!) seems to know about them. Here’s the link: wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_works_of_the_holy_spirit

They seem to refer to the charismatic gifts, like speaking in tongues and healing and that sort of thing. I’m not sure if these ‘five works’ are actually Catholic teaching or not, because 1) I can’t find them in the Catechism 2) or anywhere else, and 3) Because I took a class covering the Holy Spirit last year in college, where we went through almost all of the major writings in the Church from the beginning until now, and I can’t remember ever hearing about them.

But, I definitely don’t know everything, so I may be wrong. I hope i’ve helped a little!

the Spirit of Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, and Fear of the Lord be with you!

Hi,

I am not entirely sure which works you are referring to, but besides the seven gifts of the Holy Ghost (Wisdom , Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety,Fear of the Lord) there are other gifts of the Holy Ghost (Charismata) which include such as: speaking with wisdom, speaking with knowledge, Faith, Gift of prophecy, Grace of healing
miracles, discerning spirits, tongues (ability to speak foreign languages unknown by natural reason). These are not necessary for sanctification and were certainly not given to all. The Apostles and Saints however recieved these Charismata. Besides also the 12 fruits, none of the theology manuals which I have access to list “five works of the Holy Ghost”.
