(RNS) Fifty years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act, the president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention said black churches will be redoubling efforts to maintain access to the ballot box.

The act, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson 50 years ago Thursday (Aug. 6), was a crowning achievement of the civil rights movement. But in 2013 the Supreme Court invalidated key provisions, and many states, nearly all of them under Republican control, passed new voting restrictions that critics say target minority voters.

Not everyone in this country is eligible to vote. Showing an ID confirms who you are so that you may exercise your right to vote. This is how you keep those that are ineligible from trying to vote. It is very easy to get an ID. Why is this so hard for people to understand?
 
Go to the Post Office and get a Voter Registration Card. Fill it out; mail it in. Apply for an Absentee Ballot and mail your vote in. No muss, no fuss, no polls, NO ID. 🤷
 
Really photo ID is only required of minorities? We both know that isn’t true.
 
This is a rather tiresome cause. All real burdens to voting have been removed. They made illegal all sorts of very reasonable requirements. The poll tax may have impacted some people disproportionately but so does every rule. And you can tax every other human activity so why would this be the one exception. Literacy tests made sense. They may have been applied discriminatorily but it seems most reasonable to require voters to have some basic level of education. I can understand getting rid of this rule since the government is the chief educator and as terrible at that job as any other.

Now the complaints are just plain silly. Who doesn’t have an ID? You can’t do anything without an ID. At least one lawsuit is over eliminating some days, not all, of early voting and same day registration. Give me a break. With all the complaints come neverending lawsuits that cost us taxpayers, note that isn’t voters, more money.

The “Progressives” believe that Blacks are so stupid that they can’t manage to provide some form of identification at the polls, so naturally if identification is required, it must be an evil racist plot.

Liberals, progressives and Democrats rely on the theory that minorities are uneducated and ignorant, requiring government to run every aspect of their lives, including sufficient government handouts to allow them to survive.
