“How do you measure a year? How about Love…!”

So is anyone else as excited as I am for the release of this Tony-winning-musical-turned film?
 
Do not like musicals (except for the movie version of My Fair Lady).

I saw RENT on stage and, except for one or two songs, I was not impressed at all. Too politically correct, etc.

I am curious how others feel about this movie. My almost 14 year old wants to see it because he likes the music. I looked up some reviews online and there’s such a broad range of opinion… some feel that it glorifies sin - homosexuality - drug use - strippers etc. but others felt that it showed how lost those are who don’t have Christ in their lives. My son said that one of the characters (Angel?) apparently dies of AIDS and is said to “see the light” which he interprets as he gets to go to heaven. My problem w/ that is that I don’t think we are told that he ever repents or asks for God’s forgiveness… but he is portrayed as a “good person.” I don’t like that message.

I’m told that the basic theme of the movie is… life is short… it must be lived to the fullest… unfortunatly I wouldn’t call a sinful life apart from Jesus - full at all… more like empty & what’s the point?

Looking forward to other opinions…
 
I know the premise of this movie.
No, I will not go see it.
 
The only thing I know about “Rent” is that incessant song!!!

That being said, I am interested in seeing the movie - I believe it’s out on DVD right now.

Haven’t seen it but your description more or less gibes with what I saw on Team America.
 
good movie halfway decent message, but the half that is missing is REALLY important and so whatever.

I liked it, it does reflect how things were in that place at that time. And I found the movie very effective and moving because, as a catholic, you see all these negative things glorified and its shocking, yet you still feel for and care for the characters. makes you really think about how it feels to hate the sin and love the sinner.

I know, who are we to throw stones and all… but still looking at things from a catholic perspective often yeilds pretty interesting results.
 
Having seen it onstage several years ago, I have no desire to see the movie.

Unlike my experiences with other musicals, I left the theater feeling empty and irritated. Not only did the characters cause their own problems, but they did not learn from and rise above their mistakes.

I saw Rent on opening night-- it was FANTASTIC. If you liked the musical you will also like the movie. Generally movies can’t capture musicals as well as seeing them live, but this is about as good as it’s going to get.

The first time I saw RENT the musical was around the time it opened on broadway. It was my first time in New York, I was 16 or 17-- wow, was that eye-opening for a small town midwest girl!! I left the theater by no means agreeing with the lifestyles of all of the characters, but at the same time having also gained some sympathy for those living with AIDS and struggling to find any dignity in their lives.

That being said, I don’t think I would take a 14 year old to see the musical or the movie. The material is very mature (by mature, I mean only adults or people in their late teens should probably view it). There is a little nudity, a lot of sexual references. I think that was put in there to make it “edgy” but honestly most of the topics explored are, in and of themselves, edgy enough! (drug addiction, AIDS, death, relationships).

Hey Steph,
Thanks for your opinion… you’ve echoed pretty much what Brian said so I’ve told my almost 14 year old “NO… not at this time…” Maybe when he’s more mature and can look beyond the sinful elements in lives of the characters to the fact that those without Jesus in their lives are truly lost souls… I’ll let him see the DVD.

PS. Seeing that you love live theater (and who doesn’t?!) if you ever get a chance to see the Broadway production of Wicked the Musical… it’s awesome!

16 yo dd was taken by a friend’s family to see a travelling version of the stage show some months ago. we’ve since rented the movie and listen to the music. dd was thoroughly stage-struck, having never seen a live professional performance before.

Anyway, it has opened up frank ongoing conversation about that lifestyle and about her values as a Catholic. She observed the real tragedy of the song that goes. . . “Will I lose my dignity, will someone care” . . . that their dignity had been lost through the lifestyle they pursued that resulted in their HIV-positive status. We’ve talked about love for the sinner and acceptance. about friendships, standards, willing the best for the other . . .

If I’d known what she was going to be taken to see, I’d have kept her home, but, as it turned out, it’s been a positive experience for her and for us as a family in that it gave us the opening we needed to discuss these issues with her.
