Hi

Would someone please define “Thou shall not kill” Why does the commandment use the word kill instead of murder with our Catholic Teaching.

Thank you
Dominick

The fifth commandment forbids direct and intentional killing of innocent people.

The word ratsach, from Exodus and Deuteronomy seems to fit what we would call manslaughter – killing in anger. In the OT it refers to any killing that is done in the manner of a predatory animal eg., out of anger (provocation) or lying in wait (planning in advance).

When you ask for it to be defined…do you mean as in what comes under that prohibition in examining our conscience for Confession?

Here is a site that has a comprehensive breakdown of the 10 Commandments 2heartsnetwork.org/examination.htm

Another site:
scborromeo.org/confess.htm

I also recommend Fr John Corapi’s talk on How To Make a Good Confession
fathercorapi.com/nowplaying.aspx I just watched the DVD of this yesterday and will re-watch it again today. I haven’t heard Fr Larry Richards talk on Confession which is available from catholicity.com/maryfoundation/audiotapes.html but I have heard other talks he has given and you might give it a try. It is free.
