I am always hearing the 6,000 yr old earth objection raised by atheist… Can someone tell me where in the bible does it say the earth is only 6,000 yrs old.

Interpreting the Genealogies of Genesis

Challenged with the idea that Adam’s date is 4004 BC and that the Flood occurred in 2238 BC, Robert Sungenis shows that, according to biblical chronology and archeological findings, these dates would be impossible, for it would leave only 66 years between Noah and Abraham. Read as Robert shows that the genealogies are actually a biblical calendar that takes us back to about the year 10,000 BC, with the Flood occurring around 5,000 BC.

Anyone with access to an English translation of Genesis can calculate the number of years between the creation of the world in chapter 1 to the birth of Abram in chapter 11. It comes out to be about 2000 years.

At this point we use historical markers to determine the time between the birth of Abram and the present day, which comes out to be roughly 4000 years.

2000+4000=6000, which is the age of the earth.

It’s my understanding that the Catholic church does not take a stand on how old the earth is, but leaves that up to science.

John Marie Philomena

Not so much as leave it to science, but to leave it up to ourselves.
Keep in mind the Bible is not a SCIENCE book but a faith book.
There are errors and inacurracies in the Bible, such as the Reed Sea being translated as the Red Sea, but over-all we need to be assured that the message of God is inspired.

The intent of the Priestly author of Genesis 1 was not to give us a science lesson, but to describe how all things were created by the one true God. Also remember the perspective of his intended readers…was he going to describe how the universe exploded into a mass of time and space, and the sun coalesced from a giant ball of gas? We don’t care about that. We care that in the beginning, God created all things.

The Bible itself says nothing directly about the age of the earth. Some people interpret the genealogies in Genesis literally, and end up with the 6,000 year figure. Other people have a different interpretation of Genesis and accept the scientific figure - about 4.5 billion years for the earth.

As I understand it, the Catholic Church allows either interpretation of Genesis to be held. The age of the earth is not a matter of Church doctrine.

The Church has infallibly ruled that the universe is of finite age, but nothing about the earth.

Let’s look at the Hebrew Calendar. At present, it is the year 5770. The calendar is dated a year before the date of Creation. It may surprise some people here, but there was a time when America was proud of its Judeo-Christian heritage.

Adam and Eve were created 50,000-60,000 years ago, the fossil record, mitochondrial and y-chromosomal DNA point back to two people who started humanity. I believe the flood was universal, not global. It was not worldwide, it affected all of humanity and only eight people survived and told the story to their descendants. Job was pre-flood and yes that was a dinosaur he encountered.

The flood was most likely 31,000 years ago.

Abraham- 2000BC
Moses - 1500BC
David - 1000BC

This Earth is 4.567 billion years old, there is no evidence for a worldwide flood nor a young earth and it is ridiculous to make such an assumption. “Oh Jesus came 2,000 years ago, Adam must of lived 6,000 years ago!”

There are gaps in the genealogies.

The important thing to know is what the Church teaches. Supposedly, science is silent about God and the supernatural and there are things it cannot demonstrate as true.

There are indeed. I particularly like Matthew 1:1 “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham” Just a few people missed out in that one. 🙂

O ok. But those calculations leave out two things. Or don’t take into account two things. How long did Adam and Eve live in the garden of eden? And While Adam and eve lived in the Garden., did God create other humans to live outside of the garden? And to most of the other posters. I don’t remeber any priest telling me how old the Earth is based on any biblical texts either. So i too think that the Question is opened to ones own personal thoughts.

Not all Christians are Fundamentalists though. Some do indeed interpret it that way. That’s their choice. The RCC, however, remains agnostic on the question and leaves it to the believer’s personal interpretation.
